I found this editorial to be truer than I wish it were. I'm wondering what the rest of you think of it...

I find this to be offensive nonsense from start to finish, and here's why.

    1. If you read the right-wing blogs (and I, sadly, do) the new meme is "we don't care we just don't want to hear about it." And by hear about it (or see it) they mean that when some new NFL draftee macks on his hot girlfriend that's wonderful but when Michael Sam kisses Vito it's disgusting. Sorry, not buying it.

    2. To say it's not historic is simply either asinine or disingenuous or more likely both. Of COURSE it's historic. Michael Sam broke the lavender barrier at probably the last serious bastion of systemic homophobia in the country, the NFL.

    3. It is almost certainly true that being gay caused him---the SEC's co-player of the year---to be drafted in the 7th round instead of rounds 1-3. The last time this happened to anyone like that was in 2004. But oh no, there was nothing homophobic about it. Just like "Jason Collins will never play in the NBA because he just isn't that good"---um, no---now they say (about Collins and Sam both) "someone must have paid off/armtwisted their respective teams to bring them on. Thanks Obummer!"

This is just right-wing nonsense; unfortunately, you're usually overly sympathetic to such twaddle.

One of the first comments from his readers gave me great hope.

"So, with respect to my Christian friends, I suggest that we avoid engaging with unbelievers as counseled in Proverbs 26:4:"

Oh Please God, let these Christians STFU!

The blogger is having it both ways. The big error in his opinion is that he projects onto Michael Sam that his sexual orientation is a private matter. Michael Sam made no such proclamation. To use that against him is unfair. Just because Sam only wants to be judged by what he does on the field does not mean that his sexual orientation is a private matter.

"I'm not a bigot or homophobic, but I'm a bigot and homophobic." Accurate summary?

It is unfortunate this has been made into a media frenzy and that there are politics entertained with it. But that's how things are worked in this society isn't it? Spectacle.

I disagree that this isn't important or not historic. For him obviously it isn't. But I assume he isn't gay, assume he never had to ask or state his sexual orientation because his heterosexuality is *assumed* in most instances. We aren't so fortunate. And young gay people coming to terms with their sexuality will also look at this from a completely different angle. Social roll modeling. Finally, it is important because it flies in the face of homophobic gay stereotypes. That in itself is sufficient reason for this to be an "historic" event.

Matt Walsh is missing the forest for all the trees. For complaining about the kiss between 2 guys, people got called out, unless they also complain about straight kissing (yeah right).

Matt Walsh obviously doesn't live in today's world and has no understanding of how much courage a public coming out still needs, esp. in pro-sports. Nobody would care if it was an everyday thing.

    He should just shut up.

More hypocrisy and endless whining from Conservatives. They are all victims, don't you know? Their latest trauma is that they happened to see two men kissing briefly on TV, and now they can't stop talking about how horrible it was and how bad you should feel for them. icon_rolleyes.gif

Now that they've lost on this issue, I couldn't care less what they have to say.
(Maybe it's time for them to shut up about it and move on? Just a thought.)

    Shorter Version:

The majority of Americans are celebrating the acceptance of their gay friends and family. THIS MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE.

I am sympathetic to his personal struggle with gay acceptance. If publicly blogging or even keeping a personal journal about his psychological process helps, I support his working through his bullshit.

Double Standards. That's all it is and that is what Michael Sam is trying to break down. That is why it's a big deal.

If he was a first round pick, let alone the first pick, critics would still denigrate Michael Sam for being openly gay.

"He (Sam) chose to whip up a media frenzy"

NO, not the player, ESPN has joined the ranks of rag TMZ, they chose to whip up a media frenzy when they entered the players home, there was really no need for ESPN to be at the home, unless the player requested it, but knowing rag TV, they probably asked to be at his house and the player made the mistake of agreeing, the player is new to the media game, first lesson, don't ever invite them into your home icon_rolleyes.gif

    ESPN and TMZ, rag TV

he hasn't even played yet, nor is he a QB made star icon_rolleyes.gif

"I don't think anything historic at any point happened during the NFL draft"
    Ok then....

"There's nothing brave about any of this"
Try being an openly gay male in the NFL.

    This is all soooo dumb.

In a perfect society without homophobia one wouldn't have to come out, though we all know we're far from that. Coming out is a big thing, especially in professional sports where it's not the norm. Michael Sam was bound to be seen in public with his boyfriend anyway, considering he isn't secretive about him, so his sexuality would've become a headline sooner or later because he'd be questioned about it and he'd announce it. Also, it seems like Walsh is blaming Michael Sam for the actions of others. Michael Sam just mentioned that he was gay and kissed his boyfriend on TV (the way many other hetero players have kissed their gf's), everyone else made it the big deal (well, because it is, but don't blame Michael Sam for it).

Also, good thing that those players saying stupid and hateful shit were punished. If anyone said something racist, anti-semitic, or anything else that's hateful they would be punished too so it's not just with homosexuals. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.

    Hey... who moved my cheese?

Sadly, this is what the other 90% has to deal with now.
Change is hard for older folks, it's sad when younger folks ACT like the elderly.
Walsh has no excuse for that useless chip on his shoulder.

Haha well seriously! I'm so sick of hearing people talk about it, and even more sick of watching them cower down when I approach them about it. If I was a bigot I would at least own up the fact and say I was instead of trying to sugar coat it. icon_mad.gif

Maybe we are at a point where people just don't care about homosexuality anymore, and they just don't want it shoved in their faces. The man's point is that the bowing to political correctness makes him sick. I'm sick of constant media attention paid to anyone's relationship details, have been sick of it for years. Justin Bieber, Brad Pitt, John Mayer and Justin Timberlake could schtupp every broad within 100 miles on live TV, and I couldn't possibly care less. Maybe straight people think the same way about Michael Sam, and any other gay public figure you care to name.
That said, people do make good points about his coming out. Just that people have already had enough. To those of you who think others should "shut up", maybe they're saying the news media should realize when enough is enough.
