"Engineers must cool the 7T’s wiring to just 4 degrees Kelvin above absolute zero, the coldest temperature possible, to achieve superconductivity and generate the device’s powerful magnetic field. It takes at least two weeks and 10,000 liters of liquid helium to cool the magnet down. Dr. Pittard says it then takes about 40 hours to charge the magnet for use."

Back in the 90's, the company that I worked for decided that they would build the world's biggest magnet to try to keep up with the field. By the time they got it to work, someone else had made a bigger one. icon_rolleyes.gif

Before you go down that hallway, you have to remove all metal from your body. Every one of those rooms I've ever been in has a few objects stuck to the outer casing of the gadget. A mop that some noob janitor tried to bring into the room. Some fool's belt (I'd really like to see that happen...) A pair of glasses that someone forgot to take off... This stuff is all stuck there until the next maintenance cycle. Cautionary tales.
