I just recently quit my job because of some family issues and I was not happy at work at all. I am looking a transition into investment banking which has always my desired career, but with the intense competitions out there, my hope is getting flat(I got into the final round interview at Goldman Sachs and totally blew it). does any Realjocker work in the industry? please give me some advice. I want to just pack and move to NYc but the idea totally scares me icon_sad.gif

why do you want to peddle money (e.g. loans)? Selling other things is more lucrative.

Do you have a Series 7 investment license? You need that license if you want to stand out when it comes to interviews. And I wouldn't be bummed out that you didn't get into Goldman Sachs. That's a well known bank and they have tons of condidates applying so they're going to choose candidates with more experience than you.

There are tons of other investment banks out there besides GS. Try to get your foot in the door with any of them. After you get in, they usually pay for you to get your license and then you can take your experience elsewhere.

in this interest rate and credit quality environment - investment banking is dead for at least 5 years

You seem to be talking about retail banking products such as savings & checking accounts, personal loans, etc. And if investment banking has been dead for years, then explain why the Dow and the Nasdaq values keep on climbing up?

    ^^

you don't know what you're talking about, investment bankers are not brokers, they are salespeople who sell loans (they just like the fancy name, but they sell money to corporations primarily )some actually sell money to countries, cities, municipalities, states

maybe 1 in 10,000 actually get involved in an IPO

^^ Oh ok, whatever you say dude!

So OP, as I was saying, get your foot in any opportunity door and get your Series 7 license. Once you are there, you'll be able to figure out what area of the investment banking you like such as sales, derivatives, underwriting, etc. Lots of areas to choose from so best wishes on your career quest.
