Why is Realjock dying? (And how can its new owners turn things around?)

A number of people I know have left the site over the last little while, and I confess I've been visiting considerably less but work has also been getting busier as well.

I know it's not just me though...
    http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/realjock.com
    https://siteanalytics.compete.com/realjock.com/#.U35v6fldW1U
    http://uk.seoguardian.com/www/realjock.com

Interesting stats that while most visitors come from the US, the second most popular origin (of the IPs) of visitors is India at 8%. Also that more people are coming to the site not because they're coming back to it but from search engines (ie posts from forums).

I've also noticed that the site admin has decreased the updates to the home page in terms of what gets posted (and the topics almost consistently veer left if they're at all political - but that might not be a bad thing if that's what's bringing in the audiences?). It used to be that they updated new forum topics a few times a day, now it's sporadic and you're lucky if it's once every few days.

there would be more UK hits but there are two UK based sites of which gayspeak.com is a nice site.

for the most part I feel uncomfortable posting here for this or that reason

    +1

This is a forum where any kind of behavior is permitted -including harassment- and posters know that. People got banned for a reason, they're a threat to the community. And as long as banned members keep easily coming back this problem wont be solved.

I think RJ is like the gay Hunger Games. If you're the last one left it means you killed everybody.

The site is dated. The system for quoting looks like a mess and makes threads unnecessarily long and it doesn't translate well to using this site on a phone. There is supposedly an app coming, but I wonder if it will include the forums, because I can't see under the current forum platform that it could work that well. There is also talk of there being a charge for the app. If it does nothing to make forums more usable on a phone, I would have no reason to buy it as I am not looking for gay hookup and dating app. Chat and IM are gone and according to administration, there are no plans to replace them. I am a forum person who never used chat, but I understand that it brought people to this site, people who came mainly for chat but then saw some of the forum topics and participated there as well. Forums seem so slow compared to when I first came to this site. I miss those days. This site is pretty much operating the same way it was years ago. There's been a few cosmetic changes, but it is like they have painted a couple walls and rearranged the furniture, but never remodeled. You can't keep doing things the same way and expect to survive.

Lol. I was just being irreverent. I'm actually sad to see RJ dying, but what can we do? This is the umpteenth thread about it, and the trend seems to be persisting.

Posts shouldn't be a mess to read and follow. The quoting system should have been updated ages ago.

The news and politics forums are the thing that are contributing to the eventual demise of realjock. Guys are at each others throats constantly over political and socioeconomic views. There needs to be an increased emphasis on the athletic and sports aspect of this website. Probably we need to permanently eliminate the news and politics forums entirely and that could help end a lot of the dissention on this site. This website has become more "realcrock" than "realjock" because of all the political and socioeconomic arguing and bickering on here.

Having just joined this site, I can't really say much about it, but from what I just read and have seen from a few threads, the trajectory of this site is pretty similar to what happens to a LOT of online forums.

    1. Becoming dominated by a small group of people who either bring negativity or insist on some unpopular agenda

    2. The site becomes less appealing and traffic goes down

Like I said, this is a pattern that plagues MANY online forums and usually the site ends up becoming a ghost town

I dunno I guess I'm just easy to please. I still enjoy rj. I don't worry too much about trying to change the minds of folks who have what I might personally regard as indefensible political views. I'd much rather talk about running, travel and relationships and to just say hi across the miles.

Well....the old admin created the politics forum in order to confine it rather than the way it was before with political topics and fights everywhere on the site.

I post on a variety of subjects, but I can see how my political views could overshadow my other posts for people who disagree with me. I've heard every insult, from being called overly emotional, to a sociopath, and I'm probably closer to the overly emotional end. I do get moved to tears by beauty and tragedy.

I just figure most people keep their opinions to themselves, because they don't like getting their hands dirty, which is fine. But I'm willing to put myself out there for the things I'm passionate about. I'm a blood, sweat and tears kinda guy/seeking same on internet forums.

The original owners and subsequent owners realized that running a website is actual work. The current owners have day jobs, and RJ is just a weekend side project.

Why are you attacking this site? And I'm not aware that RJ is "dying". I think the owner should delete you. You've always tried to undermine & weaken us. That is your pattern since you've been here.

Because it used to advertise itself as a site for gay "fitness, life, and health." Then in the past year or so it slowly shifted to just another gay site that happens to have a few guys who workout.

    In short, the niche died.

It is really unfortunate that you feel this way as I actually want rj to succeed even though it should be obvious even to a man as simple as yourself that they have substantially reduced how much money and effort they are spending on the site. As I have pointed out traffic is on the decline and the traffic they are getting isn't necessarily the repeat visitors but randoms who stumble across the site off search engines and don't return.

I have met a lot of great friends off rj who understand that just because you disagree with them doesn't mean you are against them. I have a few exes off rj, met my soon to be former roommate off rj. Rj also helped a lot as I came out to friends and family.

I do wonder if part of the problem is how live chat went away.

A lot has gone into the creation and management of RealJock, since its inception in 2006. My husband and I acquired RJ a few months ago - and I work on the site every day (including weekends.) Each day I review new member photos (about 570 per day), approve Forum topics, and respond to email (help@realjock.com.)

We've owned and managed successful websites since 1993, so we realize it's actual work.

Well, it's definitely a lot harder to discover new threads than ever before, I second that.
