How many stretch regularly, especially in connection with working out?

    I don't see many people stretch ever, and as an athlete, it's always been a must for me and my physical health. Plus, it helps my running speed and jumping.

    Muscles look great, but if one isn't strong through the full range of motion then those muscles can be a hindrance too often. It seems I'm in the minority on here, but too many muscles aren't a huge turn on.

    Well said and a great reminder to stretch before you do ANYTHING in the gym.

    I am very poor at this myself and am learning the value of why it is so recommended. A timely reminder and appreciate the thread!

    I stretch every time I workout, although probably not as long as I should. As far as preworkout, I find that doing warmup sets with very light weights and full range of motion with an emphasis on feeling the stretch at the bottom of the movement helps get the muscles loose.

    I do yoga once a week (and sometimes think that it's enough stretching for the entire week). I generally try to stretch for <5 min before working out on some days (especially on chest/back and shoulder/arm days; I don't stretch before working on legs).

    I am bad at it as well. Although, I almost do some light cardio (about a milr) before each weight training session. Also I always start with lighter weights.

    I stretch between sets, less boring than waiting.
    Not the same muscle groups : bench press/hamstring stretch etc...

    I also do leg stretching before heavy leg work, light stretch for post workout recovery, and full body stretch session, this one taking nearly an hour.

    I've never been flexible, just did a huge amount of stretching to avoid losing mobility.

    I always stretch for about 10-15 minutes before working out. My sister's BF (fitness nut) got me started and drilled it into my head.

    Before running I have to do at least minimum 15 mins of stretching/warm up before hand. If I don't I get extremely painful shin splints.

    I stretch constantly as it prevents injury for someone like me who injures easily. However, recent research says that warm-ups for most people are better than stretching for preserving muscle strength during the workout -- stretching actually weakens the muscle 1 or 2 percent, which is a lot for a competitive athlete, but fine for me. The same research says to stretch extensively after the workout.

    I've always disagreed with that field of thought. Afterwards is when one's muscles are tightest, which is the worst time to stretch them.

    A good low-weight warmup is fine for a warmup, but stretching is much more than that, especially when it comes to the lower back. I stretch and warmup, then lift weights while continuing to stretch. Then I go soak though the gym hot tub seems to be down more than up lately. (Don't waste your money on LA Fitness, they're a crappy company).

    Stretches involved with physiotherapy "upkeep" of my injuries on a daily basis.

    Yoga twice a week.

    It's required upkeep for mobility, in my case. I have a good deal of scar tissue (external and internal). Without stretching, it because more and more difficult for me to move.

    I almost always stretch every day post workout.

    Generally, unless you are very accomplished athlete, stretching pre-workout is ill advised.

    I have a set of standing yoga poses I do before weight training, twice if I have time and once if I'm in a hurry, but always at least once. Sometimes, but not always, stretch after the workout too.

    And always, always stretch before running!

    Recently heard that current science recommends dynamic stretching before your weight training (YouTube it) and static, held stretches after.

    After most weight days I go home and practice yoga for anywhere from 25-45 minutes.

    I only recently got in to yoga... It was suggested not only for the workout, but also for the meditative process... I've been rather stressed of late and it HAS helped.

    Also, I ALWAYS stretch before a workout, but with the yoga in play, I already find myself more limber and the stretching doesn't seem as arduous as it had been.

    That said, I STILL stretch before a workout. Always.

    true that, brotha.
    rarely did I see folks stretching, nor did the trainer emphasised on it. I stretch everyday. but age takes away flexibility, so it gets more frustrating and less frequent.

    Where'd you get that? Stretching is a prerequisite in my experience, and I have 40 years of it.

    Yup, agreed. I've never understood those who say 'afterwards' when that's the worst time. Stretching is a great time to psych up for lifting.

    Our trainers have people stretched out all over with OUT stretching, and it makes me flinch to see them hurting themselves like that per instruction. They don't even have them warm up from what I've seen, and that's even worse. And, yes, as we get older, it all gets harder so it's that much more important.

    Stretching should always be static and held, the old school thought of bouncing and not being still is bad.

    I don't do it as much as I should. I really need to though. However, I do stretch in between sets of whatever I'm doing.

    I`ve definitely found stretching to be beneficial: dynamic before, and static after exercise.

    But the really important thing to do before any exercise is undertaken is warming up, and then cooling down afterwards.
