What do you guys think about us exchanging detainees for those held in prison?

This is another reason why it is time to show both democrats and republicans the door. Both major parties have been fucking Veterans over the years and only placate them to get their votes. A very disgusting situation.

    Tragic, but hardly surprising.

Nothing new about soldiers, etc. being the puppets of politicians, even in democracies. There`s always been a hidden conflict between the two groups. Politicians are always inclined to do a deal.

They sing their praises when needed for war, then afterwards the soldiers become either a part of the propaganda exercises, or, if an embarrassment(especially after the disasters in places like Suez, or later ones such as Afghanistan and Iraq), are quietly forgotten about. Any injured or traumatized servicemen get the legal treatment regarding treatment, pensions, etc.

All who volunteer or are conscripted should remember this basic fact: you are, ultimately, the instruments of government.

It is certainly preferable to the alternative. Five or ten years ago, he would probably have come back without his head. He is now safe from the Taliban. The released Taliban, on the other hand, will doubtless spend the rest of their days wondering when the drone strike is going to come.

They should have sneaked bombs in their luggage before releasing them. Or at least some kind of homing device. I'm not crazy about it at all, since these men will try to kill our people again, but at least our man is back.

That's what I'm really concerned about.

An article from 2010 shows that we do not consider the Taliban a terrorist group.

State Department: Taliban is not a terrorist organization
    http://dailycaller.com/2010/08/10/state-department-taliban-is-not-a-terrorist-organization/

    The Taliban in Afghanistan

"The United States sees political reconciliation with the insurgency as "the solution to ending the war," according to the August 2013 joint U.S. Embassy, Kabul–U.S. Forces-Afghanistan strategic framework."

"A lot of people, in rural areas especially, do not believe that democracy will deliver meaningful change," he says. Noting the increase in violence in the most recent fighting season, he adds, "So people vote with bullets."

hey I'm the only person who thinks Obama's foreign policy is the only thing he's done right - that is, lay off (except for Libya, which was an unwarranted attack by the US).

but the only thing this guy doesn't have plausible deniability about is his golf handicap

I believe the reason the Administration is saying they didn't negotiate with terrorists is that Qatar was the middleman, and where the 5 will remain for 1 year. Under what conditions or restraints I haven't read. They haven't rejoined the Taliban yet.

This was obviously in planning for some time, you don't make something like this happen overnight. It's stupid to think it's in any way connected with the VA scandal, which just broke.

Secy of Defense Hagel said the motivation was the soldier's failing health, which evidently we were able to monitor, however indirectly. That certainly sounds plausbile, and he's reported as being in very weakened condition in the US military hospital in Germany.

If anyone is making a political issue of this it's the Republicans, and I think their statements before all the facts are known are disgraceful. Their rush to judgment, rather than waiting, and maybe expressing relief that an American captive is free, is typical of their fanatical attempts to sabotage the Obama Administration at every opportunity.

I have little doubt that if this had NOT been done and the soldier died, there would screams from the Benghazi crowd that Obama didn't do enough to bring him home.

Exactly. Whatever Obama does, or doesn't do, the Repubs will criticize him. And I stress again, the VA scandal just broke. This deal with Qatar didn't happen overnight, I see no linkage.

Are you like that guy they just arrested, who doesn't think that the Sandy Hook school shootings happened? That it was all a fraud as an argument for gun control laws? And that President Obama isn't a US citizen? But that US Senator from Texas Ted Cruz, who has yet to produce any US birth certificate, other than a Canadian one, is in fact a valid US citizen?

    ^^

so 12 years and $1 trillion later, they magically find bin Laden in a Pakistani cave.

they shoot him (no video, which would be pretty simple to do)

take his body (not to Germany) and dump it in the ocean with no evidence of what happened (no video, which would be pretty simple to do).

then the 6 Navy Seals (the eye witnesses to the killing) all die in a mysterious helicopter crash.

    riiiiight
