Gay bars with rock music?

Does anyone know if there are any gay bars that do not play house or trance or electronic music? Do they exist? Should they exist? I know I for one would feel at home in a gay bar that plays rock music instead.

The first gay bar I worked in was very blue collar and we played rock and country mostly. However, when it was closing time I put on John Coltrane and the place cleared out.

If you make it down to Charlotte NC there are several options.

"Sidelines" would be my pick. It has been open about a year. Its used to be a straight pool hall but is now gay owned. It has pool tables and even has Wii games. All the major sporting events are shown there too. They have juke box with lots of rock, alternative, country, etc. Its next door to the "Eagle" off of South Blvd and Woodlawn. Mix of all ages crowd. Its become the pre-party bar in town.

"Wood Shed" is off I-85 near the airport. Country theme but play rock and country.

"Central Station" is off Central Ave. Kind of dull but a juke box with rock selections and pool tables.

It would be nice if there were. One of the drawbacks I find of many gay bars is the music they play. They seem very limited in their playlists as if gays won't tolerate anything buy Hi-NRG, house or trance.

I would love it if some did, but there may not be enough of a market for it.

Where do you live? In NYC, Eastern Bloc is a good bar on 6th Street in the East Village, in the old Wonderbar space. They play some great music there. You definitely won't end up hearing Cher or Britney , that's for sure. It's a fun vibe too.

it's one thing in a big bar, or a dance club. When I have to listen to it in a restaurant (or far too loud at the gym), I draw the line.

    LET ME THINK!

On the other hand, maybe this is opportunity knocking. Why NOT get a bunch of people to put in a request at a place that would be "improved" by better tunes?

Yes the Eagle here plays rock, mostly alternative rock and classic rock along with punk at times.

The funniest thing was The Hole in San Diego, which is the equivalent to the Eagle crowd/scene, and they would play 80's RnB it's the funniest thing ever!!!

All I had was A Love Supreme. Some guys just can't stand a transcendental five minute long drum intro.

It would be cool to have a gay bar/club here with rock/pop/rnb music... the only gay bar/club in Malta is all house/trance/techno and 'gay stamped' songs. Fems everywhere you look. icon_evil.gif

I hate hearing about how people will put on artists I like in bars/clubs and people leave. It pisses me off. lol. Whenever I go to gay clubs 9/10 of the songs they play do absolutely nothing for me. Doesn't help that I don't care for typical pop music.

When I lived in Austin I hung out with a gay crowd that listened to queercore punk or lesbian rock like Teagan and Sarah or the Butchies which wasn't bad. It was closer to my taste but I realized that I my taste was too individualized for any group to fulfill. icon_sad.gif

I went to a bar in Brooklyn, NY near Prospect Park (can't remember the name now) where the scene and the music was mostly hard rock and punk. Really cool place.

I wish there were some in the UK. Most of the one here play Dance, commerical Pop, Trance and all that type of crap.

The closest Ive been to a gay bar that plays Rock/metal/indie is a gay night at an alternative bar which only got as heavy as Blur Song 2 or Kaiser Cheifs. BOOO!!

On Canal Street in Manchester, UK, it you turn up dressed in altnerative styles you get treated like a leper by most of the guys and also cannot get in anywhwere.

There needs to be alternative gay rock/indie/metal/goth/punk bars.

    *wistful sigh*

I miss Eastern Bloc... The closest thing to Eastern Bloc I can find in LA is MJ's. And MJ's mostly sucks...

In Chicago...there are a few gay Sports bars that mix it up greatly....depending on the day/season of sporting events.

Maybe look for a gay sports bar....could be a better alternative

There are some fun gay dive bars in New York that play rock music:

    -Phoenix

    -Nowhere

-The Boiler Room (sometimes-- I think it's a jukebox. Also, this place is a Total Fucking Dive. Fun if you're hammered but a Total Fucking Dive.)

The Eagle in S.F. plays rock music and even features bands sometimes.
There are a few "dance punk" clubs here too. Substance is a good one
as well as the now defuncted Shadow Play. There are a few others but
I don't remember them right now.

I'm originally from Boston where there are plenty of masculine men and gay sports bars...

But, now I live in Fabulous Las Vegas. The Fun Hog Ranch is the only gay bar in Vegas that plays rock music more so than the other genres.

For the most part...Las Vegas is Bottom City. LOL

A gay bar that plays rock would be cool. I would also like to find a gay club that plays jazz. Funny thing about gay clubs is that they pretty much are the same no matter where you go - for the most part - while clubs that are mostly straight have a wide variety of styles to choose from. Among the clubs frequented by heteros, you have rock clubs, live bands, retro, jazz clubs, R&B, a few cocktail swinger places, punk and ska, etc. Also, during the late '90s, there was a 1930s/40s swing revival in some clubs... but not the gay ones.

There are some gay bars that play hip-hop or country but most play high nrg dance music. Same old DJs. Same old drag shows. Same old smoky clothes. Sometimes you can't tell one gay bar from the next.

It would be refreshing to walk into a bar that's mostly or completely gay and listen to a live rock or jazz performance by up and coming gay artists. Do any of you guys know how to play an instrument or dream of becoming a music star? Ask your favorite local bar if you and your band mates could do a show. It just might start a trend... and your music career. icon_cool.gif
