Silly, silly people

Just got a couple of calls at home a few moments ago, from a non-profit HIV/AIDS agency. They want me to do some phoning from their offices tomorrow (Wed), to contact previous donors to their organization for a fundraising effort.

They insist on paying me $25 an hour, which is way below what I can make doing professional "voice work." But I tried to tell them I would do it for free, since I don't need the money, and I've donated my services to them for free before.

But its seems it's some kind of requirement regarding a Federal money grant they got or something. I have no idea, will learn more tomorrow.

But even if I have to take their money for a stupid legal reason, I'll just donate it back to them. The last thing I would ever do is profit from helping an HIV/AIDS agency.

How silly our American system is. We get all tangled up with this kind of procedural nonsense, when all they had to do was ask me to help them out on a free volunteer basis. Have we totally lost our sense of rational practicality?

I liked our country better when it was based on common sense, and the motto "what works" was more important than "what the regulations say." Silly people, stupid people. We keep this up, and we'll fall even farther behind the rest of the world, and become what we had set out to leave behind, over 200 years ago.

Yes our system is a silly bureaucratic system full of loopholes and headaches.

But by donating the money back to the organization is a wonderful and great gesture. icon_biggrin.gif

No doubt there was some reason for this dumb-sounding plan, though it's not logical. So we regulate you but not the "we're not banks" entities that created so much chaos the past few months.

It's probably meant to create employment for someone. I'm sure the AIDS charity will spend your donation well.

You're all too generous & understanding! I'm relieved to hear (at least so far!) that I'm not nuts about my take on this. Totally stupid...

And my donating any "pay" back to them is nothing, but thanks for your kind words. I've gladly volunteered my personal services to them in the past, that would be worth many tens of thousands of dollars. And some of you may have previously read that one of my "stocking stuffers" for my partner this Christmas was a membership in his name to their exclusive donors society, which begins at 4 figures.

So they certainly know that I'd never ask for compensation from them. On the contrary, I'm a regular contributor. But this is what they must do, and in turn what I must do, to satisfy some inflexible requirements. Despite how insulting it is to me, and a total waste of time and paperwork. Gawd save us from ourselves.

If I find out it's meant for employment then I'll decline tomorrow. I won't deprive someone of income that I don't need. But I'll still do the job they ask, right alongside the hire if they wish, for nothing.

But they need this to start tomorrow, so I'm not sure what's going on, if they couldn't find anyone better, or they failed to advertise in a timely manner, or what. When I learn more I'll post it here.

As I work in a non-profit HIV/AIDS centre in Canada may I take this opportunity to say thank you on behalf of all of us.

"I liked our country better when it was based on common sense"

When was this? Nostalgia for a time that never existed.

It's called wealth redistribution. It is so sad that we have come to the day when contributions to an AIDS charity are siphoned off to bring someone's nirvana workfare to pass.

You're heart is in the right place. .
