A friend of mine has a car that recently broke down. The car is a Jetta (not sure what year) and it will cost $1800 to fix it when the car is worth only $2000. So she thinks its better just to buy a new car. How can she sell her old one? Can she take it to the dealer for a trade in?

take it to a few dealers at the end of the month, or better, at the end of the quarter, when dealers have to unload bloated inventory and swing the best deals

If that doesn't work, then donate it to a charity and she can write off the value on her taxes (assuming she's in the US). I took a wreck of a car (that still ran) to the dealer at the very end of the day in the winter when it was dark out still and the dealer didn't look very carefully at it but gave me top dollar for it. His boss looked at it when we were drawing up the papers and looked at the salesman helping me and just rolled his eyes! The salesman laughed, he sold a car…he didn't care.
