My last "why no one in RJ likes football" was a success and had around 400 replies, so no reason to bury this in the soccer section. Specially when this is of general interest and lasts only 1 month every 4 years.

Also, Im the only one capable of leading a thread like this.

woodsmen saidWhat is going on with Suarez?

England sent some little fuck from Wales to hurt Suarez and now he's recovering. We're hoping he recovers soon and be ready to play. On the other hand England wants this...

    Woodsman, 2 things:

    - the game fix of the groups is completly random. USA was unlucky they got the same group than Germany, Portugal and Ghana. On the other hand if they had a better team that wouldn't be such a problem. I hope somehow they make it to the 2nd round though, I know that will sparkle US Americans interest in the sport.

    - Messi is indeed concidered in the top 3 best players in the world (along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez) but his performance in the last World Cup was putiful. The same could be said about his team Argentina: they have many of the best players in the world but they lack unity as a team, and that's why they had such a bad performance in 2010.

woodsmen saidYou saw that Scolari predicts that Brazil will face Argentina as the final two teams in the World Cup. Am surprised he thinks highly about Argentina.

Yeah I read that and I told you Im not surprised, Argentina is one of the favorites because they got great players but as I said I woulndt be so sure about their performance. They were a big let down in the last World Cup.

Italy will crush them, and then they will lose against Uruguay.

I'm rooting for Argentina. Even though they chocked in the last World Cup would be awesome to see them win on Brasilian soil. icon_biggrin.gif

This Is What a Cursed Soccer Stadium Looks Like:

    08stadium-master675-v5.jpg

The place was built for a coronation, a colossal theater where hundreds of thousands could bear witness and celebrate. When Maracanã opened in 1950, in the heart of Rio, it was the world’s largest stadium, the site of what Brazil was certain would be its first World Cup championship. And things started well enough: The host country breezed through to the final match, where, because of tournament rules at the time, it needed only a draw against Uruguay to win the whole event. With little more than 10 minutes to go, the score was 1-1, and the fans were on edge. Then the Uruguayan winger Alcides Ghiggia put them over with a sudden strike. “Only three people have, with just one motion, silenced the Maracanã,” he famously said later. “Frank Sinatra, Pope John Paul II and me.”

The loss, known as the Maracanaço (since used to refer to any loss by the national team on its home field), became a defining moment for Brazilian soccer. (For more on the game’s enduring impact, see Christoph Niemann’s animated feature, “Curse of Maracanã.”) Just last month, Pelé, a three-time World Cup winner himself, was still talking about the defeat as his earliest soccer memory and “the first time I’d seen so many people depressed and so many people crying.” He also told FIFA’s website: “I hope nobody comes and does what Ghiggia did. . . . I don’t want to remember 1950. I have to have confidence and believe in victory.

And here it is...Uruguay's Ghost from the 50s has already arrived in Brasil!!
