I never use the URL (BB or bulletin board) feature. The system has to parse it into the html code. Sometimes the system can't properly parse the URL text string. For example, if it is a long string with a hyphen - somewhere in it, it may wrap the text and thus break the link. There are other possible reasons, too. For example, whenever you see a %20 in a url, this represents a space in the original file name (and should have been omitted, spaces aren't allowed in urls). Question marks in urls indicate a search query and response but the system sometimes sees them as potential 'wrapping points'. Etc.

I just type out the HTM by hand: < a href= "pastewholeURLhere" > . There would be no space between the < and the 'a', no space between the = and first ", and no space between the last " and the closing > There *is* a space between the 'a' and 'href' but that's the only one.

You have to be careful, though. For example, if you forget the closing " not only won't the link work, it can screw up the whole way a browser reads a page.

I think parens mess it up. Spaces maybe? An easy workaround is to shorten the url with goo.gl or tinyurl and then use that.

it would be nice if any ip address that resolves into a valid page would fit into the brackets []

Yes. And yeah, shortening a lengthy url usually solves a problem.

Make sure when you apply the url tags that it doesn't split the url over two lines.

It's just not motivated enough to succeed.

I've yet to come across a url that they haven't successfully shortened. Some have been a mile long mess.

The main thing I don't like about them is that the recipient has no clue as to what they're going to get when they click on it.
