ANCHORAGE – A sexually transmitted disease that was all but wiped out in Alaska just a few years ago is back, and the state is calling it an outbreak. Now, concern is also on the rise about what may be fueling this alarming increase in syphilis cases. Officials are linking the dramatic increase to apps that make it easier than ever to hook up. Health officials believe the ease of access to anonymous, no-strings-attached sex between men that apps like Tinder, Grindr and GROWLr provide is fueling an alarming trend.

    Should we be concerned?

Plenty of good reasons to act with responsibility.... we just keep getting reminded of the consequences if we don't. But it all seems so far away until it happens to you. I always remind myself of that.

We should be worried about how conservatives will use this as a way to demonize gay people again.

So is your advice to be complicit lest you dare offend people who are involved in irresponsible behavior?

With rights come responsibilities. The gay community owes it to itself and to the rest of society to act responsibly. I will never get why some choose to be so reckless.

No we should not be. Let's just continue to fuck ourselves to ill health and death. Because after all, we are not responsible for our actions.

The reason is not because of the apps. It's because Palin is no longer governor. Duh. icon_eek.gif

    +1!

Hey, at least he's not advocating "giving the 'gift' of AIDS," as some gay "activists" did in SF during the '90s.

Main reason I'm single and sexually inexperienced is because dudes in my area are dirty and "recycled".

    K,

Wrong. That is the EXACT same excuse used in the 80's when HIV/AIDS was starting. And not wanting to give up "sexual freedom". So many lives were lost because they did want to act responsible while the medical community was still learning about the disease.

The problem with syphilis is antibiotic resistance. Yes, it is a concern.

It's because plenty of gays have a lot of internalized self hate. They just want to be treated the way they feel.

Actually, your thinking that's a dumb post makes YOU look dumb. Conservatives have always tried to tie negative things to gays so they can try and quarantine us and keep us from having equal rights.

Pretty much every activity we engage in carries some risk.
Just getting in the car to drive somewhere is probably the most dangerous thing you'll do all day. Tens of thousands of Americans are killed each year in car crashes. Does that mean we should all stop driving?
What makes more sense is to take reasonable precautions (like using condoms and common sense) and accept that there is some risk in everything we do.
BTW, syphilis is completely treatable with antibiotics, so probably doesn't merit this level of psycho-drama.

In the U.S., syphilis is almost always completely treatable with antibiotics, but there are strains that are highly resistant to antibiotics; the same is true with gonorrhea. As time goes by, it is likely that antibiotic resistance will continue increase.

People say to use condoms to prevent infection. Fine, except that oral sex is common, syphilis and gonorrhea are often spread by oral sex, and good luck at trying to get guys to use condoms for oral sex.

When I was 19, I was sucked for the first time and the guy gave me gonorrhea. I was so naïve that I didn't even know what it was. No one can tell me that oral sex is safe!

But THE worst consequence of hooking up is that dirty yukk feeling after you walk out that door and before you get to the car.

Syphilis is also transmitted through heterosexual sex, and, I'd guess, given that heterosexuals outnumber gays by approximately 19:1, that there are far more websites to facilitate heterosexual hook ups than gay ones.
