"PHILADELPHIA — An arrest has been made in an April attack on a Canadian tourist who said he was held at gunpoint and raped in his hotel room by a man he met using the gay hook-up app Grindr."

Neither are required for going to a gay bar, where it's much easier to get laid. icon_wink.gif

People were getting laid looooooooooooong before the advent of the cell phone and Grindr. There is another reason you haven't had sex in three years and only you know the real reason.

How does one function in modern society without a cell phone? I know people did in the past but it seems nearly impossible today.

Agreed, bars are mostly how I got laid, I never used my cell phone for that purpose. And I've had one since 1990.

Well, maybe used indirectly. I'd place my flip-phone and Palm PDA on the bar, and periodically check them, but not get buried in them. Smart phones didn't exist, and cell phones and PDAs were still a bit of a novelty.

They were like bait at a gay bar. Guys saw them, when not too many owned them, and figured I was rich, smart, and/or trendy (all erroneous). Gave them an opening line they could use on me. "Hey, what's that thing?" Beautiful gimmick, the guys came to me, I didn't have to cruise at all, at which I'm very bad.

So in that sense I used cell phones to meet guys. But not through apps. By the time those came along I already had a husband.

According to the article, the malefactor forced the tourist to buy ATM cards and withdraw money from ATM machines. The tourist went along with it hoping that the malefactor would just go away.

Apparently one of the problems is that the tourist didn't consider that anyone, regardless of circumstances, can be subjected to robbery attempts and that it is a good idea to think from time to time how to deal with such situations. Since the tourist met the malefactor in his (the tourist's) hotel room, it is difficult to believe that he had no opportunity to get away after they left the hotel room. Probably his risk of getting hurt would have been less if he had done something to get away.

This is not to say that it is the tourist's fault; we should not blame the victim. However, we should be aware that such things can happen. One could even be accosted in a parking lot after shopping; it has happened. But if someone has thought about such possibilities and various ways to deal with them, he will have a better chance of escaping unscathed.

Way back in 1972, when hitch hiking was popular, a hitch hiker pulled a knife on me. Because I had considered the possibility, I was able to act calmly and talk the hitch hiker into giving me the knife. If that had not worked, I could have used plan "B" or plan "C". Had I panicked and done as he ordered, I might have been killed.

This is the type of crime/thug, for whom the death penalty should be imposed. Unfortunately, I would wager that he will get off scott free, because the victim is from Canada, and won't be coming back multiple times to Pennsylvania to testify or appear at various hearings. ("multiple", because the judges that run the criminal courts in this country are mostly incompetent hacks, who allow multiple continuances, often at the last minute, instead of having firm trial and hearing dates).

You can't blame Grindr or craigslist or any other technology! Thugs, snake oils merchants, and psychos use the same technology we all use.

Common sense shouldn't go out the window because something is "tech" as if the method makes it trusted. (I read it on the internet, so it must be true! lol).
Meet a stranger in your hotel room? Your guard should be up, not down. You should have vetted him out to some extent. get a phone # and call/text to verify. No pics? Nope! Several is better. Meet him in the lobby...meet and have a cup of coffee. Hotel rooms generally have less security than your own home. If anything doesn't ring true or your hairs stand up for any reason..........beg off and say your diarrhea suddenly has come back!

Very thankful that the tourist made the right choice to call the police and make this public. Stories like this probably occur quite frequently but because of the "discreteness" of Grindr, people are too embarassed to announce these incidents.

As others above me have suggested, if you use Grindr to meet people or directly hook up in your hotel room or home you should take the nececessary precautions or prepare for "what if" scenarios. This article is a good wake up call for several (including me! icon_redface.gif) on how to better protect ourselves. There are sadly a lot of evil-minded people out there. This article hits home for me because I travel a lot for work and I stayed in a Philadelphia downtown hotel for 9 months in 2013 (actually my hotel had a lot of conferences too, I wonder if it's the same one as the crime scene!)

I know guys who have invited guys to their homes after contacting them on adam4adam. They say that they've never had any problems other than the occasional awkward situation. I wonder if grindr is more dangerous or whether problems from it just get more publicity. In any case, it would be safer to meet guys in public first before taking them home.

No, in fact before reading this I was just thinking about that murder case and how there has been NOTHING that has resulted. I get the news every day and not one iota of info after the original report. You would think with Grindr and cellphone the police would have solid leads, if not already made an arrest.

I've never had any problems on Grindr, A4A or Scruff.

But I like muscle bottoms, over 35, and no pnp. I require at least 3 pics for verification. No thugs or DL guys. I'm not into a dangerous type. Masculine, yes, but not alpha aggressive.
