I've mentioned before how these scams are becoming an epidemic. I first heard about them from our friends who live in Key West, our favorite area get-away.

Vacationers wire money to these online sites, who offer private properties for rent. When the renters show up, the real owners are still at home, and know nothing about any "guests". OOPPPSSS!!!

If you're considering private rentals read this article:

Generally speaking, you never want to wire transfer money. There's no protection against fraud.

True, as stressed in that link. But there may be other ways to scam money with offers of private rentals. I would be wary of them, and do as much double-checking and verification as possible.

It would be smart to rent only through AirBnB (which offers protection), or, if in another country, check the specific address on a TripAdvisor.com forum. People actually post reviews of, and answer questions about, individual apartments/houses that are for rent.

eah, I have done the VRBO route a couple times and just recently one dude was quite sketchy which ultimately caused me to go with a higher priced unit in Art Deco's territory, but I didnt like the interaction. Go with your gut!
