Do You Hate Online News Videos Taking the Place of Text Stories?

I find it increasingly difficult to find coverage of some news reports online that can be read in text format. Instead, all you get is a video version. And when you click on it you get:

"Your video will begin in 30 seconds" as a commercial starts. Or 15 seconds long if you're lucky.

I don't WANT to sit through a commercial, but most of the time you can't skip them. In fact, in some cases the usual video and sound controls are missing, to MAKE you listen to them. I always hit the master sound mute on my Mac's keyboard, while I drum my fingers waiting the 30 seconds to pass.

On top of which, I'd rather have a readable story. If I feel I need images or video I'll get them later. But I like more detailed text I can examine at my own pace. Not the sound-bite brevity of a video report, that often gives you scant details, except that something happened somewhere, and often lasts little longer than the commercial that preceded it.

    End of rant. icon_evil.gif

What I really hate is when we get bombed with threads on obvious news by RJ members in a rush to be the first to post on it, be it a holiday, war, or especially entertainment news like Oscar winners, or celebrity deaths which have already been widely, globally reported, i.e.:

I'm guilty of doing that. But I always check first if the story's been posted here already. If I post but later realize it's already on RJ somewhere (most often by metta8 ) I'll delete mine if they're virtually identical. Or maybe mine's a different take on that news, so I'll post and keep it.

But my reason for posting these stories is because guys may want to discuss them here, not just read them passively from somewhere else. Plus maybe I have some of my own commentary to make about it. And for some guys they actually do learn of it sooner on RJ.

Ugh, totally. I prefer to read, too. Loading times are often an issue, too, or Apples drama w flashplayer. I usually abandon something when there is only video available and look someplace else. I can't stand those carefully coiffed talking bobble-heads and definitely don't need the big helpings of added drama. It's the news not a soap-opera!

I haven't seen any young guys agreeing yet! icon_twisted.gif

I agree and hate pretty much all video stuff on the web unless it's a training video or short and funny. But I suspect that the younger generation prefers the videos.

Text is so much easier; you can skim it and figure out if it's worth your time to keep reading it. And skip to the end and get the synopsis.

I understand some of the reasons for news videos, when the news site is operated by a TV network, like NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN. They just lift a story ready-made from their own TV news programs. And, most importantly, they can insert commercials for more advertising revenue.

But a printed story requires paying writers trained in journalism. For that reason many of their online print stories are reprints from traditional written news sources from out-of-house, like the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, or even newspapers. For which they must pay a fee. But none of these sources provide extensive coverage of my local area.

As a result I've decided to begin local newspaper delivery. My husband saw a Sun Sentinel booth at the Fort Lauderdale Home Show we attended a few weeks ago, and he wondered if I'd like a Sunday home delivery subscription. When I talked with their rep I learned they were offering to include Saturday delivery, too, for the regular price of Sunday alone, so I took it on the spot. (I'm a sucker for convention center shows, I buy everything in sight. You don't wanna know how many vegetable slicers and trick mops we have. icon_redface.gif )

This is now our second weekend, and we're both enjoying it. He sits on the outside patio with his morning coffee and bagel or muffin, reading the newspaper, very old fashioned. I just smile when I see him out there, though I usually haven't joined him in the past, maybe now that we've got the paper to read I will. I'm getting the local news I've been missing, and the Sunday comics are my favorite.

The newspaper comics are actually how I learned to read as a pre-schooler over 60 years ago, under my Father's tutelage sitting on his lap. Already transitioning to the news stories before entering kindergarten, so naturally they hold fond memories for me.

I not only love the clever humor, but the social commentary & insights most of them also contain, at times almost anthropological in their profoundness. And frankly some good art work, too, at least to my simple tastes. I enjoy seeing how the creators each have different styles that portray the same actions but in so many different and original ways from one another.

And the papers more than pay for themselves through the supermarket coupons, and store sales you learn about. Compared to online sites that make me watch a commercial in order to see their news, the papers REWARD me for reading them. Today alone there was at least $10 worth of coupon savings I can use our next supermarket trip.

Nor do I feel we're being too environmentally harmful, since our condo has recycling, and all our paper and other recyclables get picked up. I'm glad we "rediscovered" newspapers.

I prefer reading also. The video can be there but should be optional.

When I take a break at work and want to read news, if it's in video format, sometimes my work network blocks all the stream media to preserve bandwidth (and to stop employees from watching movies during work lol) so I can't see what the news is all about. icon_mad.gif

I also watch satellite TV on my 27" iMac while on the Internet, putting the TV image in a window alongside my browser window. In fact, I'm doing that right now. And I can expand the TV image to fill the entire screen when that's all I want to watch.

Problem is, the sound from a news video plays along with the TV sound, same as with your music. And some news sites start the video automatically as soon as I visit them. I've got to toggle the sound of one or the other off, or I'm hearing 2 things at once. In other words, a pain in the ass.

I'll bet the kid was drinking something while they were in the boarding waiting area. Remember when you were a kid about to go on a trip and your parents would make you go to the bathroom even if you didn't need to? "I know you don't have to but just try." I'll bet the mother didn't do that, in addition to letting her drink something before they got on the plane. But in her world it's the airline's fault.

Agree Art, hate it. And the other day when I was trying to "read" about the Lewis Katz plane crash at Hanscom Field in Bedford (BED) Mass, acommercial popped up (of course) and then I was thinking who would want to "own" a commercial (the only one of course) before a news video like this on a tragedy? There is going to be some outrageous juxtaposition soon enough on that basis I bet!
