"Obama ended his speech with a challenge to our community to expand its agenda into a broadly progressive one, looking beyond our own fight for equality to the issues that continue to hold back far too many Americans -- social-justice issues like poverty, racial and gender discrimination, immigration, and health care."

he didn't just challenge lgbt people... Right?

[I like the idea but, his platform seems ill suited to challenge given foreign policy towards w/ anti lgbt nations]

Obama is exactly right. Our circle of compassion can't end with our own community.
    His message is inspiring.

The anti-Gay fervor of Russia, Africa, etc. was imported from the USA's extreme Right Wing. There were many existing policies in place. I do think they need to be held accountable, but put it in perspective. Obama has done more for the Gay community here than ANY other President. And his message is spot on. So yeah, he can challenge us to be part of the wider range of our larger community.

From the article: "Are we ready to take up this challenge? Will our donors keep writing checks in response to appeals that aren't solely focused on marriage? Can we become the community that finally ends AIDS for white gay men and black straight women alike? Can we lead on issues like youth homelessness and a living wage for all workers?

    I wonder. I hope."

I really like how the President encourages us to rise above our own struggles, to look upward and speak outward with our strong and loving activist voice, for the benefit of all in this world, not just for ourselves.

Thank God for the blessing of such an inspiring leader like President Barack Obama.

That's why this community should be fighting for workers who aren't getting paid a minimum wage that's high enough.
That's why this community has to show compassion for the illegal immigrant who is contributing to our society and just wants a chance to move out of the shadows.
That's why this community should be concerned about equal pay for equal work, straight or gay.
That's why this community has to be concerned about the remaining vestiges of racial discrimination.

That's why most lgbt persons are Democrats. icon_rolleyes.gif

the LGBT message to Obama should be for this incompetent moron to do something other than making worthless speeches and destroying the poor and middle class

But don't you know that stuff like "equal pay for equal work" (which already exists considering unequal pay is illegal) is more important?!

I understand the criticism of marital tunnel vision but, still not moved/persuaded :c

I don't follow Obama effectively to contrast this speech but, its their money -

Maybe free up the marital issue so money can go elsewhere rather than ask people to drop the marital banners...

Lol challenging people to do more than look out for themselves - I'm a prime example of that and I've 2,000$ to my name.. Soon to be spent at a dental office no less icon_sad.gif

Lol I also doubt I'll marry

I like this idea, the direction but, not the timing nor the voicing.

Influence of anti gay sentiments would not be precluded if no colonizing/imperializing powers. Communism employed scapegoats I doubt lgbt persons was a difficult stretch to that effect regardless of influence. Obama's platform is not convincing.

I'm for social justice etc.. Maybe now more that I'm part of a community directly impacted by it - I still find the timing terrible - at a time when marriage equality is most fervently acknowledged to back away from it?

Though I dislike the marital complex the right must be acquiesced for the sake of leveraging conflicting power dynamics and social structures :c

And everyone else with a brain bailed on him too except for most of the members on this site.

All you do is BARF. Choke on it bitch. Obama hasn't been the best on foreign affairs, but you can thank Republicans for that. They have interceded at every imaginable level. Never mind what it does for our country....it's anything anti-Obama.
