On Reddit, I was having a discussion with what I call a music snob lol. Apparently everything indie or metal is good and the rest is garbage and if you don't like what he likes, you know nothing about music. This same thing has happened to me with generational snobs. Feeling like your dislike of pop culture aimed at a demographic that isn't yours makes you smart. If you're a 35 year old man and you need to talk about how terrible Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian are to feel superior to 17 year old girls.....congratulations. You are not superior to a 17 year old girl. icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, What types of snobs irk you the most and what experiences have you had with some of them?

You do realize that there are also people who are actually educated about music, right? I'm not saying the person you were arguing with was one of these, but plenty of people who are actual musicians could state rather factually how just about any pop singer around is technically terrible and be correct as a matter of fact.

Music tastes are subjective so there is no correct or wrong answer. The Beatles were a boy band like any other and now they are considered legends. Who cares.

snob is a vague term without context, but one experience comes to mind:

About 11 or 12 years ago when I was at Ohio University, I volunteered at the hockey games, recording score/stats. After one game I went to the local bar where the team usually meets after a game. A 40-something guy approached me and asked if I was a hockey player. I told him no, that I volunteered at the games. He then moved on.

I was like, wtf... must be looking for man sex with a hockey player.

There is a subjective element to musical taste, but there is an objective element to the technical aspect of musical performance.

Also, there are a myriad of things separating the beatles from "the boyband" institution.

Which is subjective as it was invented by humans, what's musically technically wrong and right. The natural sciences, on the other hand, are not subjective as human opinion has no influence on the laws and outcomes.

So based on that logic we can say that any musical artist that uses electronic instruments with effects and no reading are not good musicians because music should only be performed by reading music notes and all instruments must be acoustic? Most musicians ( The Beatles included) played music by ear. Does that mean their music is no good?

I think snobs are usually hilarious, and I love pretending to be a snob. I still laugh at Keeping Up Appearances icon_biggrin.gif

Nope. Didn't even approach saying that.
