Just a question for you guys into boxing: how long did it take you to learn roles/slips properly? I am a tall bloke and find them difficult to do. Also : did it take you a while before you learned to react to defend punches?

I have been learning a good few months now so any comments or help appreciated. I am pretty sure the above will come with practice, practice, practice....

It took ages to learn the right time to do them. The way to do it is to watch your opponent (ideally watch them sparring with someone else), and see what punches they actually use. Hopefully there will be a limited variety and you may be able to see a tell for when they are going to use a big cross. Once you know that you can attempt to slip outside them. After you have done that successfully the next step is to do the counterpunch, which should probably be a bodyshot, as a hook to the head can end up being a nasty rabbit punch.

If you are tall don't overdo the leaning back dodge or you will be punished as your feet are relatively static while doing this. Vitali Klitschko does a strange looking leaning back straight punch which works nicely every now and then if your opponent has shorter arms.

Boxing is dancing. What does your opponent do? Jab all the time? Slip under with a hook. Does he drop his right? Overhand right. I cant tell you how to box without knowing your opponent. Is he Ali? Go Frazier with bodyhooks. If he is Frazier, jab and right cross and stay away. Fighting is a dance. Know your opponent. Know what he does. Counter with your strengths. Keep your distance until it is time then hit. Long arms, stick and move. Short arms, duck under and throw hooks.

I actually boxed for 4 years in high school and 4 years in college. I was undefeated and no one has beaten my old records...lol. Not that I did not get my ass kicked. I had some unpretty wins. But I won and I know a few things about fighting.

if you are a tall bloke, you should not be slipping punches. You have a height advantage, stick and move. If a guy comes under, underhand right, then push them off for a straight left to the face. Move left and plant a right.

But more important, if you are a tall bloke, don't get caught up in infighting, it is not your strength, stick and move. Hit from the outside. Don't be predictable. Move left and right.
