Has anyone had his sperm extracted directly from his testicles for the purpose of fathering a child?

A guy on my online prostate cancer group says that he and his partner have always planned on having kids. He thought that that dream was over. But his doc says he can still father a child be having the sperm extracted directly from his testicles. He is wondering if anyone in the support group has had it done....and I am just expanding the inquiry here.

I dont know why they dont just let his partner be the father....maybe he is sterile. I could ask....but that seems a tad indelicate....even for this group!

I have see a documentary on Discovery Channel about those procedure. It is done to a men who have low sperm count and cant inpregnated his wife naturally. It really sad to see this couple desperately want to have their own biological child. The fetus conceive but she dont get pregnant.

Eventhough I love kids , I dont think I am ready to be a father, naturally of by surgery. But I cant say about the future.

This is interesting, because I thought sperm were immature while actually inside the human testes, and weren't ready to fertilize an egg until they had migrated into the epididymis, and spent some time there. The maturation process continues after contact with seminal and other fluids prior to and during ejaculation.

But perhaps I'm thinking of acquiring motility (swimming ability) and other qualities, while the genetic material sperm contains is already capable of combining if it's introduced to the egg artificially under "test tube" conditions?
