I am going to Miami alone, for 3 days in August, will be there from August 5th to August 8th. This is my first time going alone as a 21 year old, and plan on staying at a hostel in Miami Beach! I am kind of nervous! Is it weird to go out alone? I want to hit up a lot of gay clubs and bars, and also during the day hang out at the beach.. Do you think its weird to be alone? Are guys approacable?

    Thanks!

    Any advice appreciated!

Heck, in my 20s I backpacked the world alone - lots of young people do. And if you're gay and traveling alone I can't imagine a better place than South Beach. That being said...

Don't go with high expectations and you won't be disappointed. I saw a recent Miami White Party circuit party documentary and I felt really bad for a not unattractive guy in his 30s who'd just lost a lot of weight and was hoping to get laid and kept going home alone because partygoers apparently just wanted to party.

As for guys being approachable, keep in mind that many (though perhaps not in July) are tourists looking for "vacationships" and would therefore be VERY open to meeting solo travelers. Winter before last I had family obligations in a Miami suburb so I jumped at the chance to go to the gay beach when a NYC friend visited, and while there he told me I was in the top 5% of the men there (though granted, it was a weekday) and I was literally beating 'em off with a stick - AT FIFTY, in the land of the young, hardbodied and beautiful. (Go figure.)

    Experiences may vary.

Hate to burst your bubble, but South Beach (in the City of Miami Beach, not Miami, check Google Maps) has few gay clubs left. Mostly straight tourist traps, though gay friendly.

It's not weird to go out alone, since Miami Beach is a tourist mecca. And lots of gay men will be on the streets, visitors just like you. A few gays still live there permanently, though nothing like earlier decades.

"Gay Central" with all its gay clubs has been migrating north since the 1990s. Right now it's paused at Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale, but that won't last, either, before it moves on to someplace else.

For a dance club where you'll fit right in with a younger crowd try "Twist". For a day at the beach drive about 5 miles north along A1A/Collins Ave to Haulover State Park, the only legally nude beach in Florida. The gay part is at the far north end. You park on the left side of Collins (divided at that point) at the marina entrance and park in the north lot, and take a pedestrian tunnel under the road.

Another heavily gay beach is Sebastian in Fort Lauderdale, but that's some distance north. You'll find some gays on the sands of Miami Beach, but I don't know of any place where we congregate there.

It's more heavily straight because the Beach Patrol generally doesn't object to women sunning topless, mostly at the extreme south end (though technically illegal), so long as she remains prone and doesn't get up to walk around. An interesting informal rule, unevenly applied, but enough to bring the straight guys in droves. Do NOT expect the thong-clad gay scene from the movie Birdcage.

Guys are more than approachable...they're so strung out on mollies even the fitness model dudes will fuck an ugly dude just to get a nut. You should have no problem getting laid. icon_biggrin.gif

i recently heard Twist has been overrun with straights. Haven't been lately myself, but I may go in a few weeks to check it out for myself.

Twist always did have curious straights. Down from Ohio or Kansas, they wanna do something "decadent" & daring while away from home, sorta the Las Vegas attitude. And frankly, it's a hotter dance scene at night for the college crowd than many straight places are, or at least it was.

We have a drag bar up this way called "Lips" that has about a 50% straight tourist crowd. For much the same reasons. Only they tend to be older - I've even seen a table full of the Red Hat Ladies! They all think they're being so naughty.

If Twist has gone mostly straight I wasn't aware of it, but then I rarely visit night spots and not my age group, either. Would track, though, with the declining gay demographic of South Beach (and nearby macho Latino Miami is nearly gay-free these days).

If there're few gays left to keep it open then I guess they gotta turn to straights. And look what happened to Lords, that you liked for a while. These places can't stay open. You know Van Dyke's is gone on Lincoln? Not gay, but gay popular, I used to like sitting at their outside tables on the mall.

What's the name of that bar along the sidewalk on Ocean Drive, that was mostly gay? For some reason my memory is slow this morning. The Paradise? The OP might drop in there during the day, but very touristy. Still, one of the places you can watch the passing parade, from the right seat.

Actually, Miami Beach does have a gay section at 12th Street. It's marked with rainbow flags. I had fun there last yearicon_biggrin.gif

Yes but odd for a solo guy as nearly all the 12th Streeters come with others. Usually mid afternoon it ramps up as younger ones probably are working at restaurants/bars that wind down around midnight or later.

    The Palace.

We were there in the winter, for the afternoon. It had been ten years, almost to the day, since our last visit which was our first real vacation together.

I definitely saw evidence of "gay flight". It felt more like Times Square with palm trees, with people trying to hustle you into restaurants and souvenir shops. I still like the architecture but if I went again it would definitely be in the off season. We didn't hit any clubs so can't help the OP too much, but I wouldn't have wanted to be there by myself.

Thanks! I was having a mind block, knew it was a "P". I rarely go there, too touristy and cliché. I have my own favorite bars among the Art Deco hotels. For a long time it was the Victor on the second floor.

Being solo is a personal matter. I can be perfectly content being a tourist on my own, but having a companion in some situations is indeed nicer. But I don't think the OP will stand out like a sore thumb if he goes it alone. Not in South Beach.

QFT. The OP is a lot younger and cuter than me, and more available. I don't mind solitude in a tranquil setting, but in an environment when everybody else is coupled, coupling, or attempting to, IDK what I'd do with myself. We walked around for a few hours just to visit some of my old haunts (our spot during the 90s was the Penguin, which was later on Hotel Impossible.)

Most of the locals come with "others"...aka cock-blockers. Since he'll be by himself, he'll have no problem finding a local who wants to get away from his cock-blocking friends for a little while. At least that's been my experience there. I almost always go alone, just for that reason. icon_wink.gif

I guess you would know this from experience?

I went to SO BE for 2 weeks and it was one of the most social and liberating experiences that I had. It was a while back and I did go for 2 weeks. I had a great time and it was awesome in the fact that it wasn't all that sexual. Even though that hot Cuban boy with green eyes in the thrift store was so kind to lock up early.....The south Floridians are so friendly and fun!!
    You will love it......
