Well, I can't argue with either of the above but I found this concept to be about as dumb as it gets…

As an architect and real estate person, I find this hotel is actually an incredibly imaginative reuse of what would otherwise be a blot on the landscape. Whether they need a 5-star hotel in this area might be debatable but it certainly beats turning the former open pit mine in to a dump!

Interesting concept. I wonder if they can do this with the Berkeley Pit.

This weekend will be the annual San Fermin in Nueva Orleans Encierro (bull run) festival in New Orleans, which pays homage to the world famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain, or “The Running of the Bulls.” One small difference – our bulls are none other than the Big Easy Rollergirls and participants from other roller derby leagues across the country!

I don't disagree with you're overall appraisal. The problem I see is *it is boring*. Not the architectural design (very 'futuristic' 'The Jetsons', etc.). Not the land reuse. But would you want to spend a vacation in a whole in the ground? I mean, seriously, a week or two? Think about the amount of light it will get. Yeah, sure, looking out your balcony at this landscaped hole would be kind of nice for a day or two. But then you begin to notice how *little* light you get. It's fine during late morning to early afternoon but after that, it's all more or less in shadow. Is this a tropical climate? Doesn't look it to me. So, on top of that, it will be cold part of the year. What I'm saying is the *concept* of putting a Hotel in a quarry like this is 'cool' but not very practical. It has to be an enormously costly undertaking. Just imagine the difficulty of dealing with the sewage alone! I just can't see this paying for itself. Certainly not a destination I'd be interested in especially at the rates they're going to charge.

Agreed, and here's the exact same concept - without going to China.

Mine pits (and to a lesser extent, road cuts) can be beautiful things. They give us panoramic views into deep time. I worked in a mine pit for five years as it was being converted into a national park. In Britain, there is an old mine pit that the national trust burns free of vegetation every few years to re-expose the stratigraphy where Lyell first described, well, stratigraphy.

... and I brake for road cuts.

Stupid is sitting on the couch drinking beer and stuffing your mouth with greasy junk while watching millionaire retards playing a game on TV, for you. Watching TV is not a sport. Paying someone else to exercise for you does not work. icon_rolleyes.gif

I actually thought that it was a pretty interesting idea. There are several pits like that in cities near me. They have been filling some of them back up with rocks and soil....but it can take several decades to fill them back up. The holes were dug to get the rocks out of it for use in cement and building roads for much of Southern California. Building a luxury hotel or even a big office building in one of them does not sound like a bad idea, especially when considering they are in an area with a lot of businesses.

Shrine Lake in Los Angeles used to be considered a mudhole...today...it is a beautiful little manmade lake with a spiritual center:

We've had some political events in Kansas over the last 4 years that certainly are "stupid"....rather than go into any detail, (since this isn't the political forums), I'll just say, hopefully we'll have some correction, come November (and it looks promising!)

Illogical. Whether the hotel is needed or not is the crucial question. China is building these things all over their country - all showpieces.

No one is staying at this hotel, it is rotting away. They've built entire cities over there (one that is a replica of Manhattan) that are deserted and falling apart. They've built theme parks and resorts, etc which are all empty, providing no economic benefit, and are decaying.

Why would building a dump (actually, landfill) be worse? Your concerns seem limited to the aesthetics. Landfill = icky. Hotel = lovely.

But "imaginative reuse" which is useless is hardly "imaginative." It's a colossal waste.

A landfill would be infinitely more useful and beneficial here than a deserted hotel.

We do the same things here (as I indicated above). Solyndra (and dozens of baby Solyndras) are the latest example. Everyone loves the idea - it's green energy! it's so imaginative! But they don't work, and have proved to be massive failures.

The difference here is that USA has an open press and society, and we can call the bullshit when we see it, and stop it before it does even more damage.

I could say the same about proposals for "high-speed rail," which seems to set the white Liberal heart aflutter. Thankfully we have an open society which can prevent such boondoggles from getting completely out of control.
