I can't decide if this is an honest attempt to increase the overall health of gay men, or a dishonest attempt to make money from a drug they know is unsafe. Has it really been in testing long enough to determine long-term side effects?

    They know is unsafe?
"Rachel Baggaley, an official with WHO's HIV Department, said studies now indicate neither of those worries is warranted. "We have had long follow-up periods, and the rate of adverse events are low," she said. These include impacts on bone density and renal function."

Truvada has been around for over 10 years. Much of the early statistics regarding renal and other problems can be traced to who was using the drug, not the drug itself.

In the early testing stages Truvada was a replacement for some very toxic drugs like AZT, Sustiva or whatever family of drugs it was designed to replace. And the old medical opinion was to wait until T-cells dropped to the 350-500 range. Therefore there could have been significant damage already existing in the HIV+ test groups. i.e. some very sick people.

It has been a lifesaver for literally millions of people.

As Truvada has been used in HIV+ patients with higher T-cells and patients without exposure to some of the more toxic old drugs, it's relative safety has become more apparent. With a healthy Negative person there would be little to no problems.

While I can understand a healthy mistrust of Big Medicine, with the CDC and WHO supporting PrEP it's safety is assured for most people.

I'm convinced that the combination of Truvada and a condom both used appropriately will eventually make the spread of aids rare.

I am starting to see some guys advertise their PrEP use on their on line dating or hook up profiles. I am always cautious about side effects of any drug. It was years later until drugs like Accutane got a bad rap. Several 'lawsuit' commercials have recently popped up about several drugs that were once approved by FDA. I will have to wait until I get insurance to inquire about this anti Hiv med, I am not that much of a hoe to justify the daily use and constant physician monitoring

Just because 'some' want you get a yearly flu shot doesn't mean you need to get one icon_confused.gif

If people would use them in combination, maybe. But I have yet to meet one guy that takes the stuff and doesn't use it as a welcome excuse to have bareback sex with complete strangers.

'I just had 3 guys dump their loads in me, I am on Prep and have invul-mode'. Yea right, go kill yourself...

I got a better idea buddy. How about everyone stop thinking of the HIV positive guy and his right to bareback sex and start thinking about how the community needs to change it's attitudes toward sex and take some personal responsibility. "Stupid fucking moralizing and Slut Shaming, does it make you feel superior?". This is the kind of statement of which shows the real agenda of people who claim to be wise and knowledgeable leaders of the gay world.

Your defence of the indefensible is almost comical but your not the only one and I am about 'the issue" not you as a person. If you want to make the world a sex haven for those who have no self control, be honest about it as it seems that is the agenda playing out here in this 'believe the miracle' concept. If you are truly educated you'll know better than to trust drug companies. I also note like other have done you cry victim if your point of view is challenged but have a problem with accepting criticism of your views

No, the fact that I have to do it makes me sad, rather. Let's be real:

    Fact:
Prep promotes unsafe behavior. Just because the risk is reduced doesn't mean it's removed. Viewing Prep as a green light to perform bareback sex, as too many guys do, is stupid and dangerous - not just for HIV but especially because there are other STIs that are just as serious as HIV - like Hepatitis.

    Fact:
Prep is a combination of other medication used for HIV treatment. In the case you still contract HIV despite using Prep, it is possible that having taken Prep reduces the range of HIV medication you respond to positively without serious side effects because your body may have become accustomed and is no longer responding to them in the desirable way. Ask a doctor if you don't believe me.

    Say no to bareback.
