I started a course of Omeprazole about 3 weeks ago and it's been brilliant for curbing the extra acid and it's related symptoms.

    However !

During that time I've inexplicably gained like 4-5 lbs for no reason I can fathom other than the medicine.

Anyone else had a similar experience ?

I took Omeprazole too last year as a part of stomach ulcer treatment, but I didn't experience any side effects. My weight remained the same.

Maybe you're eating more since food isn't causing you problems like it was.

I take omeprazole for GERD, and some sources say take it only for 2-week periods. I usually take it for no more than a week.

I thought this too but I've been keeping a food diary and I'm not over maintenance calories wise.

I know it's fucking easy to blame meds for weight gain but I'm at a loss.

Oh well I'm off the shit in a week or so. In the meantime I guess it's the Karl Lagerfeld diet pour moi ! icon_lol.gif

I've used omeprazole and some of its variations, and I actually experienced the reverse, probably because I was also eating more sensibly in general, less fatty foods, less sugar, that type of thing. If you're experiencing weight gain then mmmmmmmmaybe it's not the pills.

I've been taking omeprazole periodically since 2005, when I was diagnosed with GERD. It was prescription then. I experienced no weight gain while using it.

I checked online for side effects, and weight gain was not listed. In fact, loss of appetite was. Though of course these side effects don't always happen to everyone, just some people report them.

Additionally, I just dug out a sheet that comes with the pills, and note it says that people on HIV antiretrovirals should consult with a doctor before using omeprazole.

It also says it may take about 24 hours before the acid reflux symptoms subside. I'm lucky - I get results within an hour or 2. Then you're supposed to take it daily for a 14-day period and stop. Some OTC packaging provides exactly that amount. I gotta tell yah, the stuff works really well for me, and I was scoped in the hospital and diagnosed with esophageal perforations because of my GERD, so mine can get serious and very painful.
