    I think so.
I'd rather date first but, it doesn't always work out like that.

    ?

Sorry, we had anonymous sex (before there was "hooking up"), started a relationship, going from long-distance to moving to the US together and we are still together, now married, 21 years later.

Yes. I'm living proof that a hook up can become a good relationship. It happened for me a few times, and so never say never.

Yeah, my ex cheated on me by hooking up with a guy, who I then started dating after dumping my ex, and we've been
together for 17 years. I guess I should thank my ex for being a shithead.

It's amazing how many of "us" never ask our parents about this topic.

In college, my dad was a "spare" bridge player (he could play, and, in those days, had a dinner jacket: All the qualifications you needed, apparently).

He got a call, 20 minutes before the bridge game was to begin: "Can you please...!!" Over he goes to play bridge. Where he meets, for the first time, my mom.

They slept together that very night. They have six sons and will be married 45 years next month.

I have never seen two people so much in love. Still.

A lot of these threads on here revolve around the same thing": "I'm gay, how do I find a partner who...."

We call it "falling" in love... because that's what we mean: We "fall".

So many guys on here have their... "lists": "He has to be this type, that tall, this ethnicity.." and so on. That's "planning" on being in love. And how do you "plan" a "fall"?

That's got nothing to do with "falling" in love: That's got to do with a basic immaturity in being able to want, or establish, a relationship.

    This isn't a "gay/straight" issue....at all. It's an emotional maturity issue.

if you give it up on the first date, even the second or third date or within minutes of meeting somebody, it's very likely that that person that you fucked isn't going to take you seriously in terms of dating you or will look down on you.

Just because YOU would judge someone, doesn't mean others will. And even if they normally would, if the, for lack of a better word, chemistry is right, they might forget "that they have standards".

see that was 45 years ago. this is now though. if you give it up on the first date, even the second or third date or within minutes of meeting somebody, it's very likely that that person that you fucked isn't going to take you seriously in terms of dating you or will look down on you.

    See above.

I believe forming a meaningful relationship through hook-up can happen although I wouldn't recommend it. They're probably more of an exception than the norm.

YOUR purpose in life isn't to "comment" on other people's relationships, get it???????

    you're missing the point.

just because back in the day that shit was common or happened regularly, doesn't mean that people will have the same luck now or that it's as prevalent as it was. it can happen now BUT it's not likely. my generation is and does not think like yours or the past generations. it's a new world out here. i've heard stories like your parents coming from people that are like 40, 50 or whatever. i don't hear much stories of people in my age group that have had the same luck. maybe a few but most of them are mostly fails or disaster shit.. the whole "i got her pregnant by accident" shit.

this is no different than people coming out of college in today's world being unable to find a job because employers want more than just a degree. maybe back 45 years ago, it was possible to graduate college, walk into some office and land a job without experience. it's very unlikely that that will happen now.

No, you're missing the "point". YOUR falling in love has nothing, at all, to do, with what "you think others" are doing. You don't even know you're doing it, but you're becoming STRAIGHT (" why, gee, a nice girl doesn't give it up on the first date....")

all i'm saying is it wouldn't be a good idea to look for love on a hookup site or through a hookup. it could happen BUT wouldn't gamble on it or even somebody calling back afterwards especially considering how guys are fucking sex crazed where they don't want shit else. dudes don't even do friends with benefits or jumpoffs. just straight to the point, hit it and forget it. one night stands.

"Looking for love" is never a good idea. Whether it's on a hookup app or in church. You only find love when you're not looking. And when you find that "spark", that vague idea that you met someone special, then you should "pounce". Standards, judgements, prejudices be damned.

There are no unwritten rules governing how people should meet, have a relationship or fall in love.

My two dads met in the steam room of the bathhouse down in Lauderdale back in the 70s. They first made eye contact across the big bed in the orgy room but every time they made a move towards each other four or five guys got between them. It wasn't until later that evening, after the poppers had worn off, that they serendipitously wound up feeling up the guy next to them on the bench with full steam on. They knew immediately it was love, adopted me as their houseboy soon thereafter and we've all been together for 40 years now. Brings a tear to my eye every time I tell that story.

Well, it may not be entirely true--I might have embellished--but that's how I like to remember it.
