THANK GOD! Stacey Campfield - the biggest dumbass Tennessee state senator, who has made national news for stupid anti-gay law proposals, was soundly defeated tonight. He was the dumbass that said gay men get HIV from having sex with monkeys. (BTW, Campfield is originally from New York.)

    ------

Dr. Richard Briggs defeated incumbent Stacey Campfield by a wide margin in the Republican primary for the Senate District 7 seat.

Campfield served in the state Senate since 2010. Briggs, a local surgeon and veteran, serves on the Knox County Commission.

Briggs outpaced Campfield by more than two to one.

"We really had a good campaign plan," said Dr. Briggs in a speech at the Crowne Plaza. "We had a good team. I'm a very conservative person. I just think people were looking for change, a change from what we've had previously."

Senator Campfield is in the headlines often for some of his controversial statements and legislation during his time in office.

Knoxville NewsFormer Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe said incumbents haven’t been beaten in a primary for the state House in 20 years, and it’s been 37 years since an incumbent lost a primary in the 7th Senate District.

“We had a plan, and we executed it,” said Briggs campaign manager Bonnie Brezina. “We were positive, too. We didn’t get down and throw mud at our opponent.”

Plenty of fire had come from outside Tennessee toward Campfield, however. He has been featured on Comedy Central shows such as “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” after making statements about the origin of AIDS coming from a man having sex with a monkey.

Campfield had also been removed from the University of Tennessee stadium on Halloween 2009 for wearing a wrestling “Luchador” mask and not sitting in his ticketed seat. The school is part of Campfield’s district.

Briggs has said it would be his intention to be more low-key as a conservative, if he were to be elected in November.

Knoxville News-SentinelMost recently, Campfield made national news when he compared the federal health care law to the forced transportation of Jews to concentration camps during the Holocaust in a blog post. "Democrats bragging about the number of mandatory sign-ups for Obamacare is like Germans bragging about the number of mandatory sign-ups for 'train rides' for Jews in the 40s," he wrote. The misspelling of "mandatory" appeared in the original text.

Also some good comedy from Tennessee's most anti-gay wannabe politician... although I doubt she intended for it to be funny.

    http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2014/08/07/snls-victoria-jackson-falls-incumbents/13755741/

TennesseanVictoria Jackson, the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member who has made a name for herself as an active tea party participant, conservative activist and outspoken opponent of President Barack Obama, has lost her bid to win a spot on the Williamson County Commission.

Jackson received 632 votes, losing out to Judy Lynch Herbert, with 1,422 votes, and Betsy Hester, with 1,380 votes.

It is conservative to give people as much individual freedom as possible. Thus, anti-gay laws are not really in accord with a conservative position.

pazzy saidyou seriously don't think that she lost because of that though right?

Actually, yes. Because most Tennesseans don't appreciate "stupid" people. He embarrassed the district and the state. As mentioned in this thread, the only "anti-gay" people left in the GOP is the Tea Party folks. There is still a lot of "anti-marriage" people, but not "anti-gay."

The GOP in 10 years will be fully supportive of gay rights. I would predict that the Tea Party splits by then anyway.

This is good news and right you are on all counts. I've visited central and eastern TN several times now, always enjoyed its people, scenery, and myself, and will be coming back for more. Nice to see this nincompoop rejected by sensible GOPers. I wonder how much of it was due to his carpetbagger status???

This is great news for Tennessee and its GOP organization. I am very happy that this right wing dimwit got crushed at the polls. Hopefully this is the beginning of more progressive thinking and tolerance in Tennessee and in its state GOP organization. Even if Tennessee remains a predominately red, republican state it will still become more progressive and accepting to all groups of people. I remember travelling across Tennessee and remember it to be a very scenic and beautiful state. It would be a travesty to allow the NARROW MINDED BIBLE THUMPING SCREWBALLS take over this wonderful state and keep it behind the times. Now that Tennessee is apparently shifting to the good, now heres hoping that both North Carolina and South Carolina will start shifting more towards the center and join Tennessee in rejecting bigotry and ignorance.

I hope that you are right because the GOP as a whole needs to change in order to remain a viable political force in this country.
