NYT: Publicity about suicides, especially those of celebrities, has been linked to an increase in suicides. "Suicide contagion is real, which is why I’m concerned about it,” said Madelyn Gould, a professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry at Columbia University, who has studied suicide contagion extensively.

Suicide prevention advocates have developed guidelines for news media coverage of suicide deaths. The idea is to avoid emphasizing or glamorizing suicide, or to make it seem like a simple or inevitable solution for people who are at risk.

Never heard of this till now, so I did a quick internet search for "suicide is contagious."

    Mind. Blown.

Honestly I thought about suicide most of my life and came very close manytimes. Until a close friend did it, he was like a father to me. I saw all the real pain, and felt all the real pain he caused to people, even people he did not intend and that changed my life.

That's exactly what the research on my internet search pointed out, too...that people who've lost close loved ones to suicide are less likely to follow through with it themselves.

Losing my uncle to suicide in middle school, then my best friend to suicide in high school, probably contributed to why I never followed through with it when I was contemplating it.

"Guidelines for media coverage." Doesn't sound Maoist in any way at all.

I know what goes through peoples minds. When they about to take their lives. I have had many friends commit suicide around me and even infront of me... trust me, it is contagious. I tried it once before, people always say that people who commit suicide are weak and running away, thats not true. You try living their lives. Go through what they have. So yeah, its contagious... but trust me when i say you are not alone. Things do get better.

Suicide seems to be contagious when a celebrity dies.

You see the Radical Left ploy in everything! HOW something is reported can make a difference.

I guess you didn't read the link since you termed it "Maoist"

"Two Viennese studies on suicide contagion* found that less extensive and dramatic media coverage of subway-related suicides resulted in fewer suicide deaths following the reported suicides. In fact, subway suicides and non-fatal attempts actually dropped by 80 percent in the six months following initiation of a campaign to encourage safe media reporting. The total number of suicides also declined."
