Not a guy who IS a jock, but an actual jockstrap, an athletic supporter.

I'm so old-fashioned I still wear one, and now that I'm using a gym regularly again I needed some new, my old ones kinda ragged. Not that anybody's gonna see them for the time being, I'm still not in good enough shape that I'm gonna strip for the shower or sauna. But I can dream...

So anyway, I went to Dick's Sporting Goods today (which also has good golf stuff I get), and the only jocks they had were something called CORE Support, Shock Doctor. I have no idea what the actual company name is, or if it's a house brand. I was hoping to find a classic Bike like I already wear, but they had none.

I guess genuine athletic jocks are a dying product. I wonder why? I think they still fill a need, but apparently not a big enough one, other than outlandish gay fashion versions, that would embarrass me in a locker room. icon_sad.gif

LOL! Not that I wasn't already, with better jock credentials than half the guys here. Even if I am old enough to be a grandfather to many of them.

BTW, I may ride (cycle) to Wilton Manors tomorrow evening, weather permitting. Wanna catch a meeting at the Pride Center. I'll txt ya if I actually make the trip.

Great, and PE me what the meeting is about, and what time. We go there regularly, just a few blocks from us. Meet you for eats at Rosie's, and/or drinks at the Village Pub. We haven't seen you forever.

But you say evening? Can you cycle back in the dark? That's a nasty ride at night.

You bought a jock STRAP. I was hoping you'd bought a jock slave boy toy, like this.

No. Why I stated in my first line, in unambiguous terms:

"Not a guy who IS a jock, but an actual jockstrap, an athletic supporter."

Still, a jock slave boy... No, STOP! Control yourself, Robert! Your husband wants a strictly monogamous relationship. And so do you. So no jock slave boys. No matter how luscious they are.

    Gawd give me strength.

You can still get the classic Bike jockstraps online. Try Amazon.

Thanks, I know. But I still like to just run over to a nearby store to buy something, when they have it. For me, online is for those things I can't find locally, or might be offered at some really low price I can't get in stores. And without the shipping charges.

I'm gonna go over to Sports Authority, which is just up from Dick's. The only reason I went in Dick's was because my husband was shopping in another store nearby, so I wandered away. I also got some golfing socks at Dick's.

Last time I was in Sports Authority they did have Bike brand jocks. I could use some more, I only wear them once a day before washing them. Perhaps tomorrow when we're out and about I might swing by there. We have a number of errands planned, along with possibly meeting with an RJer for dinner. icon_biggrin.gif

On the Internet you can by traditional athletic supporters. There is no need to drive all over looking for items that few stores carry. Moreover, all that driving often costs more than the item you wish to buy.

I see they have ones with a cup. It would be interesting to see what happens if you wear one while being X-rayed at the airport.

This is totally off topic but I saw "A Winter's Tale" last night and in a brief shirtless scene wrapped in a towel Russell Crowe looked a lot like this.

Not for me, when both Dick's and Sports Authority are less than 2 miles away. The latter I'm gonna check out next, where I bought my last Bike jocks.

And happy day! I was going through my clothes hampers, and found another Bike jock I thought was lost, way at the bottom. A man can never have too many jocks, can he? icon_wink.gif

Oh, and BTW, we did meet with paulflexes, and later had dinner with him. Gawd, he looks great! I dunno what he's been doing, maybe all his off-road biking, but better than I've ever seen him. He wasn't bad before, but now he's even more attractive, and younger looking, too. I was having trouble not staring at him. icon_redface.gif

I would think that RockHard across from Georgie's or one of the other gay toys/clothing stores in or near Wilton Manors (e.g., Pride Factory on NE 13th Street; Tropixxx; 4 Men at 1208 NE 4th Ave) would have Bike or similar jockstraps, even in different colors (black, red). They're kind of a fetish item among the BDSM/leather crowd, aren't they? I'm not at all into that stuff, but I have noticed the old, wide-banded jocks in some of these stores.

Thanks, I know those places, go to Pride Factory for gay trinkets (next to a year-round Christmas store, where I bought our tree this year), also Leather Works, Rock Hard sometimes for lube, and Gay Mart in the strip next to the Alibi (they carry no clothing for my size or age, Twinkwear), right down from the lesbian-owned optical shop where I get my eyeglasses, the couple good friends of ours. Tropixxx is mostly videos and sex toys.

So I really do know these places, it's my gayborhood. And none of them sell serious athletic jocks, just flimsy fashion & fetish. Nothing I would want to be seen wearing in a locker room. When I wear a jock it's because my balls need support, not my ego.

beaujangle saidMmm interesting! Do you think jock straps will come back some day?

Well, MINE keep coming back. I still don't know how that one could have been at the bottom of my clothes hamper for so long. icon_redface.gif

But if store shelves are any indication, jocks continue to fade in popularity. What I saw almost exclusively in Dick's Sporting Goods were cup supporters, for contact sports. That's a special function of a jock that ordinary underwear briefs still don't effectively replicate.

But for simple gym use and most athletics a snug brief works just as well for most men. And with today's baggy gym wear, that look to me more like ladies bloomers from 1900, going commando is also an option, or boxers, especially if weight lifting or circuit training only.

Whereas the linerless school gym shorts we were issued in 1963 were so small, sorta like a looser version of a square-cut swimsuit, a jock was mandatory to keep your stuff from hanging out the leg opening. And Jockey shorts were no help, since they weren't the "tighty whities" we have today.

Instead fairly loose & saggy, and so high-waisted they could extend past the gym short's waistband. A big no-no in those days, when men & women NEVER showed any glimpse of their underwear, unlike today.

So unless some of those former conditions return I see no rebirth of the athletic supporter. Especially not with men's underwear continuing to evolve with new materials and construction. The special sporting need a jock originally met no longer exists (you know it was for the new bicycle fad in the 1880s, later adopted for other athletics?), when men's underwear was a Union suit, and later baggy boxers to the knees. Which is why jocks may also soon no longer exist.

Bike and UnderArmour make some pretty good stuff. Now that personal grooming is so much better, jocks aren't as practical as they once were.
