Joining a 85% gay gym

  • Aug 29, 2014 12:32 PM GMT
I am 18 in the closet gay. I have lived in Cambridge MA since July of this year. Living with my uncle, his wife and their 2 children. Nobody knows I am gay. I may join a mostly GAY gym later today. It has a membership of 12 guys between 19 and 25 the other 127 are mostly 40-60 year old gay males. I have talked to the owner 3 times by phone. Haven't visited the gym yet but it is private. Thinking in the past I have felt attracted to older men but this is a gym not a sex club. All I would like is some guidance on your thoughts of me joining. The least amount of membership is 3 months.

Not quite sure what "advice" you are expecting. I think you need to question why you are joining a gym, the usual reason is to get fit not as a hook up joint.
It's a bit weird that you know the demographics of the place the fact that it's a gym seems almost incidental.

Even though OP's from Boston where presumably there's an active gay, and gay STUDENT, culture, I don't see a problem with his question (even though it seems like trolling). Why NOT seek out a gay gym and learn the demographics beforehand? If it's demonstrably not a bathhouse why not workout in an environment you deem friendly.

I used to belong to Chelsea Gym. I didn't mess around in the locker or steam rooms but it was a nice departure from the macho posturing at straight gyms. And it afforded more options, not the least of which was that at Chelsea I'd always be allowed to work in. Not at my straight gym. I miss that. I wish I had a gay gym option when I was 18 just so I had people I could talk about stuff with - online forums and instant messaging aren't the same. Though I did do a free week at one in my early 20s (Sheridan Square Gym in the Manhattan's West Village). I looked 17 then and the older men were less predators and more mother hens protecting me from predators, like the guy in his twenties who asked if I wanted to be in a "movie."

There's only 139 members?? I guess that might be enough to keep you busy for 3 months if you pace yourself. Just dont do 50 in the first 2 weeks or you'll end up with no one to do for the last month you've paid for.

See if they'll honor a 2 week trial membership. See if you feel comfortable, If not?, move on.

What kind of guidance? How to lure older men at gym? Or are there enough gay members worth the 3 months memebership?

If you want to, try it. It does seem like a free tour or a trial week should be available, though.

Cambridge is quite a place. If you are looking to meet people I doubt if you could get a much better area. Since you are interested in school look for lectures, recitals, readings, discussion groups, rallies or even long walks around campus.

You could also come out to your aunt and uncle; they might be very accepting - family support

You live in the Boston area. No one at this gym is going to care about your sexuality because most likely, they're way too much into themselves.

why aren't gay gyms more popular?

surely most straight guys feel kinda weird sharing locker rooms with gays?

i want to join a gay gym but the only one i know it's a 2 hour drive from my place.

I would worry first about whether it's a decent gym and second (or not at all) about whether it's a "gay" gym.

I did work out in a predominantly "gay" gym for a week once and was not very impressed with the facility. I was impressed that wow, these people actually buy and wear that weird transparent stuff from the International Male catalog icon_rolleyes.gif

On the other hand, one time I was walking past the big "24 Hour Fitness" gym downtown and turned on the "grindr" app. I thought my phone was going to melt down. Hard to see how there could be room in there for anyone who wasn't cruising...

Coming out can be a scary thing. I was from a small southern town with no known homosexuals, so when I started coming out, I would drive to the city and go to a lesbian bar because I was scared shitless to go into a full-on predominantly male gay club by myself. And, I kind of dressed like a lesbian, so I blended in easily.

It's not a bad idea to test the waters before jumping in. At a gay gym, you can meet other gay guys with the shared interest of working out...it's a start.

I avoid gyms with sexual tension. Focus on the work not the scene. Pay the day pass and work out there once during peek attendance -- like a Monday at 5:30pm. Then decide.

Have you ever worked out at a "non gay" gym ?
There are always at least a few moronic macho assholes you have to put up with.

Jeeez. You'd think that the guy that defended you would merit a thanks, but apparently not. This mother hen may have laid her last egg as this happens to me on RJ all the time: http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/3767200

Actually, I did belong to a gay naturist (nudist) club. And while we didn't have our own gym, we'd sometimes arrange for a private closed-door night at an ordinary gym, or health spa, where we could all be nude. Very nice, and for those here curious about how we did it, we draped towels over the equipment as we used it bare-assed.

Not that you would actually know how to weightlift.

With your saggy old goat balls dangling round your knees it must have been a hideous sight to behold:

Considering that I taught college phy-ed for 3 years, and maxed every Army PT test I ever took for over 20 years, or that's I'm already signed-up to do a 165-mile bicycle ride this November, that's pretty funny.

And what are your own credentials, Mister Empty-Profile sock, who "joined" here 2 weeks ago?
