Reading her autobiography "Enter Talking" in the '80s I still remember her best from two of her "serious" stories from it:
The first was when at 21 she wanted to be a serious actress and at some obscure upstairs tenement theatre in Greenwich Village played "Lesbian In Black" opposite 17 year old Barb(a)ra Streisand.
The second around the same time was how when living in a women's hotel in NYC she made a joke to a boyfriend about how she was going to sleep with somebody, he blew his stack and told her parents, and her father, a wealthy doctor, sped into the city from Larchmont, told her she was moving back home immediately and threatened that if she created a scene in the lobby he'd have her wrongfully committed. She was terrified because she knew as an MD he had the power to do it, and went quietly.
She could've rested on her laurels as a doted upon pampered daughter but wanted more - and got it. She had balls.
