They released their new album for free today. I'm a huge U2 Fan! but there last 2 albums were very light weight. Nothing but ''rock anthem'' after rock anthem and nothing ballsy at all.

This free album has a few good songs on it. And good production by Danger Mouse. But is still stuck on that rock anthem sound. They used to take chances (Achtung baby, Zooropa, War) now they play it very safe.

Anyone else here a fan? what did you think of the new album?

What band, after 35 yrs, still takes chances?

They're a great band with great songs and even greater causes. But I think it's best to relate their career as an analogous to a mountain climber:

A mountain climber studies a path, trains, plans, and most importantly, executes as precisely as possible to get to the top of the mountain. However, he cannot stay at the top for extended periods of time due to lack of oxygen. The conditions make living intolerable. So, he must travel back down - recounting the experience at the top. My point being, no artist can stay at the top of the mountain, meaning they keep producing hit after hit after hit constantly nailing new "unsafe" tracks. Critics just won't let that happen (prime example: Linkin Park). So, they have to come off their high and back down to reality one way or another - either by career suicide or by gradual loss of interest. I think U2 is choosing the latter of those two options. That's not to say U2 can't climb another mountain, but the next one probably will not be nearly as high as the first one.

There's still quite a few i think. Swans is a very good example of this. They've been making albums since 1982. They mad classics in the art rock, noise rock, experiment scene. And there album in 2012 is their best so far. They still take chances and make great music.

U2 had a pretty good run of great albums from 1983 to 2000 (Minus pop imo) that's a pretty good run!
