So last year I started seriously working out for the first time in my life. I had a trainer set me up a routine which consisted of 3 days of lifting/week (1 day per muscle group) plus 1-2 days of cardio/week. I followed the routine closely, ate a good amount of protein, and had at least one protein shake a day. After about 4+ months I saw no gains at all. I understand 4 months isn't a long time but I expected something... maybe like 5-10 pounds (is this not realistic?). I got caught up in school work and lost my motivation to continue and put it to the side. I really want to start again soon but I don't know if I should go back to that routine or try something else. I consider myself an ectomorph (look at my profile and judge for yourself so based on the article I read below I thought maybe I should try crossfit instead as it is a short intense workout (my workouts usually took 1.5 hrs). I'm looking for any kind of advice here.

I think 5 - 10 lbs is a bit unrealistic. Well, if you don't care about getting fat, then I guess you can eat like a whole pizza everyday.

Can you post your workout routine? And an example of the foods/meals you eat on a given day.

I dunno. You kind of look to me like the sort of guy who, if you stick with it, will look like the king of the world when your'e 40. Meanwhile, change things up every three or four months to see what works for you. Maybe crazy amounts of protein, and low-reps high-weight for a while?

    Count your calories!

It sucks but it's honestly the best way to know your getting enough. You won't grow if you don't eat and you won't grow if you don't enough to eat.

You should be eating probably twice as much as you do. Based on your height and weight alone you should be eating close to 3,000 calories a day.

And for perspective, I initially put on 30 lbs in 4 months.

Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to imply that you don't look great now ;)
