Pride, a heart-warming British film, starring Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, and Dominic West, opens this week. Like most good British films, it is filled with great character actors. Also a lot of goodlooking relatively unknown actors and extras. It's a fictionalized version of a true story of events in England in 1985 during the great coal workers strike under the Thatcher government. During the strike, which lasted about a year, an unlikely small group of gay activists in London decided to raise money to aid the strikers and their families. Calling themselves Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, they helped out a small mining village in Wales. Their first meeting with the miners had some difficulties, given the nature of macho rural Welsh miners, but their relationship developed over time, with ups, downs, conflicts, and lots of comic moments. After the strike was over (in real life, not in the film) the national miners union gave full support in the Labor Party for gay rights legislation.

Speaking of coal mining and its related industries, I'll take another screening of "Iron Lady."
