These kind of attacks are abhorrent & should not be happening in this day and age. Having said that, there is much we can do as gay & bi-sexual men to prevent the sort of hatred that inspires these kind of hate crimes.
I'm talking about the attitudes and behaviour we endorse and their is some very unhealthy parts which includes respecting heterosexuals as we would expect to be treated, examining why gay men have created outrageous high risk sub-cultures and after many years of fighting unjust labelling of gay men as a danger to children, I see things such as Dad-son fetish being accepted as a name, then we wonder why the hell these things happen.
The worst part is the attitude that we should not judge and let other gay men do whatever thinking "it doesn't effect me", the tie wrong as it often happens that the offensive behaviour of one person is internalised and that person isn't the one who cops the homophobia wrath, instead it's often the next gay guy that offended person sees that becomes the victim of the attack, who would be unaware of the likely danger or why it happened to them.
Time for us to look at what gay culture deems normal and review before this sort of attack becomes more common place which would be terrible. History had shown that when a minority in society allows it's excesses to affect the general public, even if as usually the case it's a minority within that minority, general community tolerance dries up quickly and emboldens biggots
