In 1980 the first female band to write and play their own music and fight sexism in the industry from a pure punk background... THE GO-GO'S

Saw them twice and they were HUGE and changed the entire music industry for the first time against sexism. THE VERY FIRST FEMALE BAND TO WRITE AND PLAY THEIR OWN MUSIC. They fought the record company to do the full version of Our Lips Our Sealed but this song on the same album is creeping into my head... TONIGHT. When I say PUNK I am talking about the fact IRS records that signed them on with their first album literally told them to slow it down and they would make them huge and they did.

Look how beautiful they are in 2013 playing "Tonight" off their first album. They just got a star on Hollywood Walk Of Fame. They DESERVE it for what they stood up for. What they stood up for was NOT sexism... IT WAS SIMPLY MUSIC.

    re the bit in bold.
In America maybe, but in the UK the all female punk band The Slits formed in 1976 & wrote all but one track on their 1979 1st album. Nowhere near as successful though.

The go gos made some great tunes in their day but they didn't like eachother much and the drugs took their toll. They should have got their act together in the 80's but Belinda had a really successful solo career for awhile.

Love the Go Go's! They formed in 78! They played quite a few years before they garnered a record deal! We Got the Beat its such an incredible album. People think it's fun and poppy, but it's super dark laced with incredible lyrics! They were revolutionary here in the states!

I've seen them about 7 times in the last 10 years! They still tour. Their fan's have the BEST energy, it's incredible to experience.

If you haven't already, check out their double disc! Return to the Valley of the Go-Go's. It has a ton of unreleased tracks and live performances!

Plus Belinda Carlisle's son is gay advocate. I think a few of the Go-Go's were lesbians... especially look'n at their late'70's pics.
