I'll be visiting my eldest son and wife in Oakland for the first week of October (30 September -- 7 October).

I'm interested in enjoying "affordable" (free or cheap) museums and other forms of cultural entertainment while in the Bay Area. All suggestions welcome, including what you may deem as once in a lifetime pay whatever it costs to see site.
    Thanks

Not sure what you're interested in, but if you just Google 'San Francisco Museums' you'll see more than a dozen of the best ones, and a map of where they are as well. If it were me, and I had time for only a few places, they would include the deYoung, and the Legion of Honor. If you go to the deYoung, don't miss the top floor. The prices all vary, but they are well worth it.

DeYoung and Legion of Honor museums are free on 1st Tuesday of the month.
There is a Groupon.com offer for $5 admission to the Gay/Lesbian History Museum.
The contemporary Jewish Museum is free the 1st Tuesday of the month.
A Bank of America ATM card gets you into a number of museums free.
