So I have decided to try getting more into swimming. I learned how to when J was little and took lessons. But I didn't go for so long ever because I got very self conscious about my body, But I am feeling like I am getting over it. I got a good pair of goggles and decided to give it a go. O do remember a few things but obviously my form will need to be practiced.

So far, elementary backstrokes I really like and I go fastest doing those. I like it because my face is always out of the water. Breaststroke is similar, it's easier to breathe because my torso isn't twisting like if I do front crawl. My front crawl technique has always struggled. So I really don't like doing it.

So which strokes are your favorites?

Butterfly! Lots of splashing and you look ridiculous, but it's a terrific ab and shoulder workout.

You seem confused. For future reference: going limp isn't faking an orgasm.

OP, I haven't seen you swim of course but from what you've stated it sounds like you might enjoy the crawl more if you were doing it right. Your bod shouldn't be twisting but gracefully swaying. Could be from what else you said that you're not breathing properly. Without swimming, practice breathing to both sides of your body by just standing in the water with your face in and out. Then swim alternating left/right breathing. Though I tend to breathe from just one side in a sprint, always favoring one side reduces symmetry even of the strength of your stroke.

Let your kick be a constant to stabilize you and to maintain forward motion. Dive you fingers and arms ahead of you instead of them falling flat on the water. You don't just let your arms fall to grab the water from the surface but dive them down ahead of you and then grab and push back on the water from just below the entry once your arm has been extended. If you are flailing on the surface, that also might create the twisting you mentioned.

The only other thing I can think of that might creating a twisting is that you are somehow using your abdomen to maybe contract your arm and then thrust your arm forward but that strength should come from the shoulder, back and chest, not a motion writhing up from your mid section. It's only called a crawl, but you swim it like a fish, not an eel.

I swim 1500-1750m long course, on alternate days doing a mix of free, breast, back, and side. Yes, that's sidestroke, to keep up my lifesaving skills, which have come in handy several times decades after I first learned and used them as a lifeguard. The mix allows me to stretch and use different muscles in a complementary manner, and every time I get out of that pool I feel like a million bucks!

Interesting that you like the backstroke. Not being a great swimmer, I always like that and the sidestroke. Breaststroke, meh. Crawl, not like--too hard to breathe with plugged up sinuses. Butterfly? You're kidding, right?

There are some variations of kicks, etc. that you can do with side and back strokes. Check with a good swimming instructor.

Learning to do the crawl is worth it, but you should get a good teacher to help.

The front crawl is my best stroke, it's easy and you barely think when you're doing it. Though my favorite would have to be the butterfly, it wastes so much energy but it's really fun to do, though I'm still struggling with it.

Free was my "event" in HS and college, but I like to mix it up because doing so makes each stroke better. I do like to "wail" when I swim my free laps, though; really makes me kick butt and it feels great!

^ Probably the same stroke all of guys use since the beginning of humanity.

But, I have to change my previous answer, the fly is not working out well, I guess I will go with breast stroke, it's much less tiring.
