Should i feel bad that I think the 2nd guy with the facial hair is attractive-ish?
They'll probably get away with 2 hours of community service. That's just how the "justice" system works. Plead guilty and we'll give you a great deal.

That is the whole goddamned problem with our judicial system. Commit an act of violence against a gay or lesbian, against a black or a Hispanic person and just get a slap on the wrist and some bullshit $200.00+ fine. Commit that same violent act against a wealthy white person and you will end up doing prison time.

Well, they've ruined their own lives for the thrill of beating up some random gay dudes who were minding their own business.
Even if they only get a couple of years in prison (obviously they deserve much worse) they've messed up their ability to get decent jobs, probably forever. Deservedly so.

The woman is the daughter of a local police chief. You know SHE won't ever serve any time. Probably won't even be convicted.

And none of them are being charged with a hate crime, because Republicans legislators in Pennsylvania have prevented violence against LGBT from being made hate crimes under State law. Just as Republicans in the US Congress have blocked similar Federal laws from being passed.

So that although the victims and witnesses have reported the anti-gay epithets being screamed at the victims, that evidence can't be used in Pennsylvania to charge the perpetrators. They can only be charged with ordinary assault & battery. And clever defense lawyers will likely convince a jury no crime of any kind was committed in the first place.

Ya know, I am appalled at this new ABC drama, even before its first air date of 9/25, this shows concept is true but taken right from the movie Devils Advocate, If I were ever an attorney, I would never have the conscience to defend the guilty, when I knew they were guilty. Part of the problem of our country's legal system, due process, even for scum bags. Ironically, this new show stars Viola Davis as a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university, and the show was filmed in Philly. I mean just replace the show title with, "How to almost murder somebody by brutal beating and get away with it", hope this show tanks in the ratings icon_evil.gif

This should be interesting. I know that is true, but there was quite a stink about this case. If people don't see some kind of action taken it could get ugly.

I'm for some reason struck by the scene in Torch Song Trilogy where Arnold (Harvey Fierstein) confronts his mother (Anne Bancroft) for her constant needling about his sexuality.

YOU LOST YOUR HUSBAND IN A CLEAN HOSPITAL.
I LOST MINE ON THE STREET.
THEY KILLED HIM ON THE STREET.
    28 YEARS OLD LAYING DEAD.
KILLED BY KIDS WITH BASEBALL BATS!
THAT'S RIGHT, MA, KILLED BY CHILDREN.
CHILDREN TAUGHT BY PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
    QUEERS DON'T MATTER!
    QUEERS DON'T LOVE!
AND THOSE THAT DO DESERVE WHAT THEY GET!

Was just about to say that about the two guys... sparked by jealousy or internalized hatred for who they really are. Psychology can be scary sometimes.

The judge should throw the book at them! And this occurred on Sept 11th of all days. Getting sick of these gay hate crimes happening and gay guys being viewed as "easy" targets. Maybe it's time to invest in some self defense classes?

BTW, the girl is a police chiefs daughter so there's a chance they'll get off with slaps on the wrist. icon_mad.gif

Not if they're ¿tried/trialled? on a federal level, which has been mentioned.
    Could happen.

I live minutes from the police chief's township and I can tell you that authorities here are outraged and I would not be surprised if the girl receives prison time and a fine of $100,000. Your email suggests that justice will not be served. It will be served.

Time will tell. I certainly hope you're correct.

And being you're a "local" perhaps you'll do us the favor of keeping up updated here. Because these kinds of stories, that make a big initial splash in the national media, get forgotten in the months, and often years ahead, before they are ultimately decided. We're counting on you! icon_biggrin.gif

Was the coach one of the group taking part in the assault? Why weren't all of the people who were there charged? And why does it seem in these cases that the guys doing the beating are always good looking?

This hate crime should put tremendous pressure on the Pennsylvania legislature to ignore the conservative opposition and pass the hate crimes bills put before them. I cannot believe that a developed northeastern state like Pennsylvania is so far behind in protecting all its minority groups from hate crimes. It just doesn't make any sense. I could understand if this occurred in West Virginia or Kentucky because those are poor, predominately rural states. But for Pennsylvania to be the same way is totally inexcusable.

Besides these three stellar citizens, I read that a fourth person (another guy) has turned himself in (accompanied by his attorney). One of the bastards (and I mean that word) has said that the gay couple threw the first punch. Sure they did. The gay couple sought out the four drunks and wanted to attack them for being straight? Yeah, right.

Well it's certainly possible that the group hurled slurs at the gay couple and perhaps one of them threw a punch. But either way doesn't deserve getting held down and beaten.

If that's true, (or to the degree that it's true) I don't think it is an accident.

One of the motivators in a crime like this is perceived loss of privilege. Young, straight, Caucasian men of means* who fit society's definition of "attractive" get used to deferential treatment. The more of those boxes they can check, the more privilege they get used to.

The fact that a group which was -- up til fairly recently -- considered outcasts and deviants are starting to step into the mainstream upsets their worldview. To some subset of the first group, observing this phenomenon triggers a concern about loss of that privilege, as if there is a finite amount of respect in the world to be rationed. The way they act out varies, but I think the motivation is the same.

    * I don't mean "the 1%" who are largely insulated from social phenomena regardless of the other groups into which they fall

Interesting theory, and perhaps correct in this particular case. But there's always been the simple bully, who seeks out those perceived to be weak & vulnerable. Plus straight men, more than women (except freaks like Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, et al), can feel actual revulsion at gay men. Why I'm not sure, but that may have been a factor here, too.

And gay bashing was going on long before gays began to make legal and social advances in the US. Back when gays were indeed at the bottom of society's barrel. Actually declared illegal for who they were, and a common laughingstock, they were still randomly beat up. My older husband tells me about those times, and his contemporary friends confirm them.

So that today we actually have it BETTER, now that we're beginning to get equal civil rights in some US places. But perhaps resentment of that legal & societal evolution was partly what enraged these straight attackers, I dunno. Straights have never needed a reason to bash gays.
