Has anyone seen the new show "Henri Matisse: the Cutouts" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York? I visited it yesterday and it was extraordinary. It will surely be remembered as one of the major shows of the new cultural season here in New York. There were an enormous numbers of works, each of which testified to Matisse's command of form, color, composition, and of course, cutouts. It included one of my favorites: The Snail (1953) (see photo). The impressive original is approximately nine feet square.

Along the same lines, ahem, if not blazing the trail, I'm waiting for another exhibit of Konstantin Malevich's works to be staged. For now, though, this

    takes the cake.

The New York Times had an interesting review of the show and history of these works last week. Probably easy to find it on their website.

The cut outs are quite breath taking...but they must be seen in person. No photograph can do them justice.

Even if it is, there's usually a long line waiting for popular shows, and MOMA keeps a limit on crowd size. So if they're really busy they halt the entrance line until other people depart.

Actually, for this show they are managing things well in that you must purchase a timed ticket. Unless you're a member, then you can go whenever you want.

I just went for the second time and liked it even better. The MOMA did a great job of presenting more than just the popular cutouts.
