Hubbard was indicted by a grand jury on 23 charges accusing him of misusing his speaker's office and his previous post as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party

Hubbard says the charges, weeks before the November vote in which he's favored for re-election, constitute "a political witch hunt."

A political witch hunticon_question.gif Really. If these are legitimate charges which resulted in an indictment than this man needs to come up with a better explanation than a political witch hunt. Otherwise he is just another typical disgraced right winger who got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. Hopefully the people of Alabama are paying close attention and realizing that these right wing conservatives are the biggest bunch of crooks and hypocrites to ever walk this earth. Could this lead to the painting of Alabama either as swing purple or democratic blueicon_question.gificon_lol.gif

In the article it says that former Democrat Governor Don Siegelman and former Democrat Mayor of Birmingham Larry Langford are SERVING time for corruption too.

While I'm a liberal Democrat, it seems the axe cuts both ways even in this particular political forum. Looks like the better conclusion is that Alabama, red and blue alike, is a corrupt cesspool of pay for play, extortion and coercion for personal financial gain.

I lived in the state for a decade and was completely repulsed but the level of corruption at the State level. The constitution was written by Pittsburg mining executives after the Civil War to concentrate all power at the State level which they could control through bribery. They also intentionally kept the education system poor and highly religious to ensure an unending supply of cheap, obedient labor for their mines and foundries. The same constitution is in place today. The schools are still terrible (ROLL TIDE! WAR EAGLE!) and the population just loves Republican ideology and especially the nastier aspects of Republican aggression and character assassination. Though when Dems ran things they were equally corrupt. Only they took their marching orders from the Teachers Unions who kept the kids stupid and their benefits handsome. The Dem in Birmingham mentioned is just the old Huey Long kind of corrupt city politician except now it is the Blacks' turn to steal from taxpayers.

The place is a cesspool. Florida politics isn't much better.
