Incident began on Elgin Street, at the public tomb oft he Unknown Soldier. A gunman with a rifle (according to eyewitnesses) stepped out and sghot one of the two guards at the Tomb, firing four shots, then he ran off toward Parliament, pursued by other memmbers of the Armed Forces.

This public area is very close to National Defense HQ, so there is always a lot of men in uniform around there.

    UPDATE:

Harper evacuated and now in an undisclosed location.

    More shots being fired.

    Parliament is being evacuated.
A perimeter is being established with cops surrounding the place. Guns out. All this is happening in a very small perimeter. People are taking cover behind stone walls and columns

Unclear if there is only one gunman.

It's very sad that this should be happening in a largely peaceable country like Canada. Alas, I think we will be seeing more of this (probably London next if MI5 drops the ball) as ISIL starts to feel the squeeze in Syria and Iraq.

MPs were in caucus meetings when this began. Harper was ushered out of the caucus room and taken to an undisclosed location. The rest of the MPs are still in lockdown, but everyone seems to be okay.

All the Party leaders were taken to safety.

Parliament is situated on a cliff over a ravine that drops to the river. It is steeply inclined and densely wooded. There is ample hiding space and it is hard to search. There is also a tunnel accessible from behind Parliament that runs under the street.

One shooter confirmed dead, but shots heard after that death establish there is more than one gunman. Reports of gunman on roof causing police to order public back more streets.

From above Parliament a shooter can command a wide view, and it is not uncommon for the RCMP to have snipers on the roof of Parliament during State Visits.

I'm guessing the soldier shot at the War Memorial was a ceremonial guard. Hope he/she pulls through.
