Many places to go in LA:
    - Hollywood Walk of Fame
    - Universal Studio
    - Beverly Hills / Rodeo Drive
    - Santa Monica Pier / 3rd Street Promenade

    Outside of LA
    - Disneyland (Orange County)
    - San Diego (Sea World, Legoland, Coronado Island, Balboa Park, Hotel Coronado, etc)

To name just a few from the top of my head. There are so many more...

If you go up to San Francisco from LA. You can drive along Pacific Coast Highway and stop by Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Hearst Castle. If you have a few days, you can spend in Monterrey too (a lot of beautiful scenery).

Just south of the SF Bay Area (my neck of the woods), is the Santa Cruz mountains which have the oldest, most gigantic redwood trees in the world, like Big Basin State Park (down the street from me, actually). If you like epic natural scenery and/or hiking it's certainly worth the diversion.

Not sure if that's true ... what about the far north coast and Sequoia National Park?

It's similar to Big Basin Park: old-growth redwoods up to 4000 years old.

West Hollywood definitely has a lot to do for night life. Plenty of clubs and bars. You'll definitely want to see the hollywood sign. And the Walk of fame. Muscle beach is fun with tons of eye candy.
