We Just Rejoined 'Broward House' At A Fundraiser Tonight

Specifically, their Spirit of Hope donor group, which we helped create some years ago. Broward House is the largest HIV/AIDS agency in the State of Florida. Their link is below, along with these others I'm gonna mention, so you know who & what they are.

Last week we also rejoined the Founders Circle of the Pride Center of Florida, at another fundraiser. And before that, my husband returned as a board member of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus. Which he had co-founded nearly 30 years ago, the first gay men's chorus in the State of Florida.

This is our personal Renaissance, and the full return to our gay community, after a series a medical setbacks. That included strokes, heart surgery, cancer, hip replacement... the list goes on.

So I had said then that we need to clear the decks, we've got too many outside commitments. You can keep your SMART Ride (which he also co-founded, and is closest to his heart), but all the others have to be put on hold, our health takes precedence.

I removed the hold this month. He's looking good, I'm feeling ehhh (but I'm secondary), and I want him to be back doing the things he loves. My philosophy has always been that when the time comes, you should go down with all flags flying. And my husband feels the same way.

So this has been a great couple of weeks for us. We're back doing what we love to do. icon_biggrin.gif

And I mention all this not to praise myself or my husband - that would be impossible on RJ, as well I know. But rather to encourage you guys to look at your own local communities, and what things you can do there. Whether gay or straight causes, you should be involved.

Or if you have no local community groups, then at national organizations like HRC, to which we also belong, or your State Equality organization. There is always SOMETHING there if you look.

Good question. I explained why I made this thread, as an encouragement for other gays to do the same within their own communities.

    LOL!!!

Straighten Yer hat Mabel, Your slip is showing....

    Lay off Him SB.

    Those are charities.

I think it is rather cool that Art and His Husband do so much. They probably earned a few bragging rights...even tho that is sorta the opposite of charity.

Give credit where credit is due.

AND WILL THE BOTH OF YOU HONOR THE DAMNED TRUCE ALREADY!!!

If You Guys can go one (1) year without sniping at each other, I will give 5 grand to the charity of Art's choice and 5 grand to the Republican candidate of SB's choice.

Double it if You Guys can find some common ground and find a way to be decent to each other.

I did it with both of You.

SURELY You can do it with each other...

SERIOUSLY? I have some HIV/AIDS charities that could use that money. One here in Fort Lauderdale is the Children's Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) that deals with various children's diseases & disabilities, to include pediatric HIV.

Those pediatric HIV/AIDS cases are heart-wrenching. Our SMART Ride, that my husband co-founded, gave them $153,000 last year.

And our SMART Ride has 6 other HIV/AIDS not-for-profit agencies we endow, usually with at least $100,000 each. Who use our money to buy things like HIV testing vans that travel throughout the community, or to upgrade Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) for those living with AIDS, to create testing, education & outreach programs in the gay community, all kinds of financial assistance.

Yeah, I'll take your offer, if it's serious. And we'll discuss where you would like the money to go. Not to politicians, but to HIV/AIDS agencies. I have many worthy candidates to suggest.

I know there are MANYworthy causes.

I get like 900 worthy requests a week.

Start date would be November 1, 2014.

And I got spies... So don't think I won't find out if You Guys are at again.

And if You want Double -- You have to be able to prove it. The forums would be a good place for that...

I will begin holding My breath ....NOW!

I'm a little confused. SB & I must be civil AFTER Nov 1, or right now? To earn money for my HIV/AIDS charities I'll gladly start right now. I sure hope you're serious, and not conning us.

And I'm not clear about this doubling business and proof. What constitutes proof? Well, whatever it is, I'll not say a bad word about SB, or confront him, if it will get these AIDS agencies some money.

For their sake I hope this is real. And if I win, I'll give you their non-for-profit info, so you can have a tax credit by sending them the money directly.

    Very John Carpenter...

    You want double?

Prove it in the forums here on RJ

    Find common ground

I'll let the Boys of RJ decide next year if it seems sincere.

    Yer on.

Just me personally, if I lived such a charmed life of fundraisers and candlelight dinners, I would be too busy enjoying life to bother with posting about it on RJ, let alone have 36,000 posts. Don't waste your golden years here, OP!

Now, what EXACTLY was the point here crazycrazycantshowmyface???

He and His Husband ARE enjoying Life. And Giving a little something in return.

RJ is a viable community that He enjoys participating in.

That can't possibly affect YOUR life, so what does it matter If He has 36 MILLION posts???

    Back off....

It was not a bitchy compliment. I saw that Mr. Deco's thread was quickly sinking down the list into oblivion with not even a dozen views, so I bumped it up to the top of the list with my quick comment in an effort to help, as the combination of an Art_Deco topic and a Southbeach comment really draws in the crowds.

And, as usual, it has worked and this topic has now received many more views, and a renewed lease on life, as a result.

    You're welcome Mr. Deco.

I apologize. Given your history, it just seemed a bit snarky. icon_confused.gif

I may indeed be posting less here, at least in the evenings, when most of these fundraisers and receptions take place. We're gonna be very busy again, especially for a restaurant dinner my husband & I are personally putting together for about 100 people to support the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus.

But I'm also retired, and handicapped, so I'm usually sitting down, either at home or wherever we go out. I'd rather be doing something than sitting & daydreaming, and so with lots of time on my hands for much of the day I'm at my iMac, or iPad I always have with me, which has an accessory folding keyboard.

That's why I'm able to have such a high thread count. Plus the fact that I love to write, and can type fairly quickly. And I post about these things to encourage others here to do similar charity work, whether mostly for the gay and HIV/AIDS communitues as we do or not.

It's not about having a "charmed" life so much as having what we hope are useful lives. And that's not wasting our golden years, in our opinion, but making them more meaningful. But yeah, fun also, if a bit tiring at times! icon_biggrin.gif

"SAGE" is also an acronym, for LGBT senior groups. There's no standard wording for it throughout the US, but in this area our SAGE group means "Seniors Active in a Gay Environment".

I gave them some money, and I think became a member, but my husband said they're too old for us, we're too active for that crowd. LOL! So we've never done anything with them, we're busy enough on our own.

But they're good people, and annually they volunteer to operate one of our SMART Ride pit stops from Miami to Key West. We'll be seeing some of them in about 2 weeks on the Ride.

If there are really charitable donations at stake some ground rules should be established as to how to ascertain whether seemingly innocuous statements/compliments are sarcastic/disingenuous. What if this can't be determined? What if there's a presumption of "guilt" (snark) based on past history? What then should the behavior be going forward? To not say...anything at risk of misinterpretation?

And what of humor, which is subjective?

    The question is:

Who decides if a "nice" comment is disingenuous, and how? I don't have the answer to that.

What's even more hilarious is you apparently confusing who said what in this thread.
