    I've seen this behavior described before on TV nature shows. Apparently the dolphins are "herding" prey fish ahead of them with this loud jumping & splashing action, into a tight mass where they will be easier to catch. It's in effect a kind of "pack" activity seen in terrestrial species like wolves.

    And yeah, it's fish 'herding', the reason why ancient fisherman loved dolphins so much.
