I mentioned in another thread I wore my genuine Scots kilt to the Halloween festivities on Wilton Drive. And I liked it so much, as I always do, wearing it authentic without "knickers" underneath. Talk about going ultra-commando! icon_biggrin.gif

So today I bought another kilt online. But not genuine, a non-tartan version made here in the US, for more general daily use.

If it arrives in time I'll take it to Key West in 2 weeks, and wear it around the grounds of the private clothing optional gay guest house where we're staying. Given that some guys are totally naked (as I may be at times myself), a kilt presents no problems. It's just nice to have some fabric around you to sit on, sorta like a towel. The question is whether I'll have the nerve to wear it outside on the public sidewalk. We'll see...

Ah, when I did that with pics from our October Key West trip I got lambasted here. And my thread got trashed & derailed.

In fact, for that reason I avoided having pics taken of me in my genuine kilt 2 nights ago on Wilton Drive. Unless someone took candids I didn't know about.

If you don't wear it in Key West, you can always save it for Portlandia, where it will be unremarkable. Sadly, (?) I recently discovered that the Elliot Bay Bookstore in Seattle has been replaced by the Utilikilts boutique. Dunno... looks like those things have about five times more fabric than a pair of shorts.

A Ultilikilt is exactly what I'm getting. I first saw them when I lived in Seattle, where they're based. Not a true kilt but a hybrid. But perfect for what I want.

All kilts have lots of fabric, due to the pleating. A genuine Scot kilt has enough fabric to make 2 flat skirts for a woman, maybe more. A Ultilikilt has less fabric than a real kilt. And of course isn't in a clan tartan fabric.

But then my Scot connection is very tenuous, through a French ancestor who initially served the Duke of Argyle. And fled to the American colonies with a Scottish wife after the disastrous 1746 Battle of Culloden.

So not having a clear clan link, I chose the Black Watch tartan for my husband and myself, due to the military connection (and I just liked the color & pattern). I served with some of those guys in Germany. But for my Utilikilt I just got a solid black. What I like is its non-traditional pockets, so I can carry my ID and cell phone.

BTW, where or what is Portlandia?

Ah, good news... the bookstore isn't out of business, just moved to Capitol Hill. Should have asked the iPhone when I was there.

Portlandia is usually on the IFC channel. Or at the end of I84.

I never wear a sporran. Too clumsy, bangs my balls. And never had my kilt lift. Unless some guy came up behind me and raised it. icon_eek.gif

I'm still confused. Are we talking Portland? I bought an RV there. And a car just outside Portland, in Beaverton.

I love Cap Hill. A lot like our Wilton Drive here. Gay Central for Seattle.

YAY! Just got UPS email notification it arrives on Monday, Nov 10, a few days before we leave on the SMART Ride for Key West. So I'll be able to wear it when we get down there as I wanted, the main reason I bought it.

At a gay men's guesthouse where some guys walk around completely naked, so a kilt worn with nothing underneath it presents no problem. I wanted something comfy that would give me fabric on which to sit when I visit the outdoor bar or other seating.

Sorta like a towel wrap, but a little more reliable & practical, with pockets (these kilts from Seattle are modernized, in washable fabrics, not authentic). I once again remembered how comfortable a kilt is when I wore my authentic Scottish tartan kilt on Halloween last week, and got this idea. Maximum commando, short of being nude.

Only complication is the 10th is also the day I'm scheduled to do a reading at a Veterans Day concert in Boca Raton, so we may not be at home when it arrives. I'll have to verify with UPS if they'll leave it at our condo door or not. The value is $275, so I'm not sure. I may have to ask a neighbor to help, like I did when the iPhone 6 arrived last month.

The Utilikilts have pretty heavy fabric. For dealing with heat and humidity, I'd recommend a lighter weight kilt, such as SportKilt (http://sportkilt.com/).

Not only are they lighter, but they have authentic tartans, and are much easier on the budget than the Utilikilts. I have several Utilikilts, but mostly wear the tartans these days.

Just what I need poolside, which is where I'll be wearing this kilt. And if I slip and fall into the water I'll sink like a rock. LOL!

On the other hand, when I'm ready to swim, the kilt will make it easy to strip, having no underwear, nor pants legs to step out of. I'm hoping it will make the perfect gay guest house resort wear.

Yeah, that occurred to me. Which is why I didn't get their outdoor camping and workman's models, made of heavier duck fabric, and more pockets adding additional layers of fabric. I went with their lightest and least expensive cotton/poly twill, to sample it without making a really big investment. Plus as I've mentioned, I just want this as gay resort wear, basically a wrap with pockets.

But neither would I want a light shirt fabric in a kilt. A kilt requires some weight, in order to hang properly, and not be a woman's skirt. My knit Black Watch tartan kilt is pretty heavy, and I think probably has more pleated fabric than this Utilikilt, but is never hot. Plus this one will be washable, I've gotta dry clean the other ones.

I appreciate your advice. How have your Utilikilts held up? Any problems?

A lot of the Highland games competitors use SportKilts, probably based on cost. The pleating and fabric isn't the best, but is acceptable. USA Kilts makes a higher quality kilt, and it's my favorite.

To answer your question, the Utilikilts are practically indestructible. They've held up very well, and I think you'll be happy with yours.

Thanks, I appreciate your reply! The fabric weight was indeed a concern I had, as well as its feel. I'll be wearing it naked below the waist, and I'm cut. That's another reason I didn't get the coarse duck fabric.

With my authentic wool knit tartan I wear an extra-long white T-shirt, under my outer shirt. The long cotton knit T forms a soft barrier against the kilt cloth, and keeps it cleaner.

I haven't decided what shirts I'll wear with the Utilikilt. Poolside it may be no shirt at all, but at the bar I'd like a shirt. I also have some very long golf polos, but I don't think they're long enough to cover my ass & stuff under the kilt. Well, all these questions will be resolved in 1 week.

What the fuck is your deal. You're 65, no one wants that kind of imagery in their head. Now I've avoided commenting on your posts for some time but you're starting to push it. Honestly man, my virgin eyes can't handle your shit.

Being ageist, young man? Your solution is simple - put me on Ignore. Then you won't see anything I post, either in threads I start myself or to which I contribute.

And BTW, my appearance in a kilt is not much different from when I wear cargo shorts, my usual clothing down here. And the topic of going commando in our clothing is often discussed on RJ. You just joined RJ less than 3 weeks ago (not "for some time"), and already you're giving us rules to follow?

I'm acting on the forums behalf by saying NO ONE wants to read about you "going commando" in a kilt to aids rallies. Though I may be new, I've already accumulated more messages and hotlistings than you ever will. This is my forum now. Stop posting stupid shit.

There's an ignore button Kovyn - hit it. Just because artdeco posts a lot about himself, do you think the rest of us read it all? Why should you?

And why are you even here? - the guy who says he "hates being gay." If you hate being gay, there's something you can do about it.

And BTW, I never said I have worn or would wear a kilt to an AIDS rally. In fact, we don't have rallies, we have fundraisers. My new kilt is intended as resort wear, at a clothing optional gay men's guest house, as I stated. Your reading skills are somewhat lacking.
