He was the online publisher of "Mark's List" which I've often linked here for gay community info in South Florida. A wonderful guy.

He had made the first 100-mile leg of the Ride on his bike, but then went on foot to find a restaurant, despite having a dinner provided at our overnight stop. In fact, we instruct participants not to leave the resort grounds. He was hit by a pickup while crossing US 1 in the dark.

Our first fatality in the 11 years we've been doing the ride. Not technically while the course was open, neither riding a bike nor crewing, but still our first loss during the 2 days of the Ride. icon_cry.gif

Very sad. US 1 can be dangerous late at night. Dark in so many spots. Drunk drivers. Drivers taking advantage of light traffic. Hope someone takes over Mark's List and keeps his memory alive.

Thanks, we knew him. Not aware of the final arrangements, we don't return from Key West until Thursday evening. He was killed late Friday night near Marathon Key, most of us didn't learn of it until Saturday afternoon.

That stretch of US 1 along the Keys (aka the Overseas Highway) is indeed poorly lit in places, as you say. But the inital news reports say all the drivers involved stopped at the scene, not a hit & run, and alcohol was not involved. No charges have been filled. It appears he made an error in judgment in trying to cross at that moment on foot, and in not estimating the speed of the cars, the posted limit 55 mph in that stretch.

Yes, this was his first ride with us. He lost 70 pounds in the last year, training up for it. He was a valued member of our gay community, with his Mark's List I often linked here. I had lunch with him a number of times, saw him regularly at social functions. I was shocked when I got the news.

    Wow, that's horrible! icon_sad.gif

Mark's List was my website of choice for learning where to go when I first moved down here in 2004.

A guy who gave to our community in many ways. I wasn't even aware he was on the Ride this year until informed of his death. I didn't see him during registration. I'm very upset.

I heard there was an incident, but didn't begin to get the details until late Sunday, and more today. When I learned who it was I was devastated. Almost everyone from the Ride has departed KW, but my husband & I stay until Thursday Friday. About 50 of us went on a sunset sailboat cruise Sunday (pics to follow), but nobody mentioned it.
