    If you're over 40 and feel insecure ...

    Stop being such a fucking crybaby, get off your fat ass, go do something active, eat healthier, lose your fucking ugly-ass gut, and stop blaming the world cause you lost your ability to have fun.

    Just my $0.02 USD. icon_wink.gif

    I'm knocking on the door of 50 and I ran up these steps in Falmouth in about 35 seconds last week. Why should I feel insecure?

    The 40s were a breeze. Not much difference between them and the 20s, not really, you get hit on as much, maybe even more because by then the younger guys are hitting on ya too. Not even the early 50s when ya still get hit on. It's the late 50s that start to suck and I'm gonna bet the 60s-90s won't be so much fun. Though I understand from talking to some guys older than me that you care less into your 60s so that's good. Apparently its this transition period that sucks.

    If you guys are in your 40s and having trouble getting laid already, you might wanna cash in your chips now. And for you guys in your 40s who think your still such hot shit: you ain't seen nothin' yet. Life's about to smack you across the head with a 4 x 4 fence post.

    Okay, well, that was my inspirational moment for yas. Have a nice day.

    fact of life you will lose the 4-10% of physical and mental functionality every decade you are past a given year (40).

    there are good things that happen as you age if you let them.
    -I would say try not to hold on too much, even 1999 was a long long time ago.
    -marriage equality is mostly available now in the 1st world. I am thinking the current crop of >30year old gay bitter bitches have less than expected family skills.

    Fascinating science or pure bullshit. Let's look at your 10% number, just for grins.

    if age 40 = 100% capacity
    then
    41 = 90%
    42 = 81
    43 = 72.9
    44 = 65.61
    45 = 59.049
    46 = 54.14
    47 = 47.83
    48 = 43.05
    49 = 38.75
    50 = 34.87%

    So you are saying that a 50 year old functions at 35% of the capacity he had when he was 40? Looks like BULLSHIT.

    I know, I know. It's my naturally cheery nature.

    But think of it this way: you might still get hit on in your 60s and then won't that be a pleasant surprise.

    I'm very lucky that I come from a family that enjoys aging. Since I don't find youth appealing that helps as well. I know my 40s are going to be a kick ass decade

    No idea why you are questioning me. How about questioning the guy who claimed up to 10% annual declines in functioning.

    If I read rightly the report I posted, Figure 1 shows on the longitudinal study a decline of the cognitive ability in reasoning of about 10 points in about a 30 year period between ages 30 & 60 so that's a deterioration rate of about 0.6% per year. Not 10% as the previous posted said.

    But aside from that, the aging brain does have some benefits over and above a younger brain (at least until dementia sets in, obviously).

    For instance:

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/19/health/enayati-aging-brain-innovation/
    ..."There are neuro-circuitry factors that can favor age in terms of innovation," observes Dr. Gary Small, professor of psychiatry and director of the UCLA Center on Aging.

    First there is empathy, "the foundation of a human-centered design process." Empathy is critical to design because of the need to understand the people for whom you are designing.

    Older people have a greater capacity for empathy because empathy is learned and refined as we age....

    ...Older people are also highly capable when it comes to the "define" aspect of human-centered design -- that is, the unpacking and synthesizing of empathy findings into compelling needs and insights.

    An aging brain can better tease out patterns and see the big picture, Small says.

    Whereas younger people may have better short-term and get-to-the-point-quickly memory, older folks have had a greater variety of experiences and are better able to build a wider image out of a lot of different parts of memory. They can make more connections because they have more things that have happened to them....

    ...As we age, we are better able to anticipate problems and reason things out than when we were young. Small's research shows that our complex reasoning skills continue to improve as we get older....

    Well done. I've seen those steps when on holiday there, if I recall rightly they are off the main square and are as steep as they look.

    if you're feeling insecure at 40 you probably were feeling insecure at 20.

    all but the most narcissistic have SOME insecurities. if they're more than background noise you need to get up and make some positive changes in your life or find a better hobby than fretting about your looks.

    and jesus christ you guys will fight about anything :p
