I understood that oil wrestling and hammams were DEFINITELY not gay? Turkey seems to have a very complicated approach.

That's a very friendly looking oil wrestling match. I wonder what he's looking for down there.

PDA among all kinds of people are still common in Eastern Mediterranean. Friends walking together with their arms on the shoulders of each othericon_razz.gif Or even soldiers holding hands...

Now, these guys may be also having sex with other men or with each other since they are close friends. Or not.

But many of them are not gay in the sense we use this word in most of Europe and in the Americas.

Eastern Mediterranean societies are still conservative when it comes to premarital sex. Men do expect to marry a female virgin, mostly because it is a matter of honor. No one out there is particularly keen on raising other guy's kid, either... Which leaves the young dudes pretty much to themselves to take care of their own sexual urges.

So, young guys, mostly outside the major cities go out and hang out together. No doubt, sex happens, too. And everybody knows this. Since so many people are involved on a very private level, no one thinks that there is anything wrong about this or that the matter should be talked about at all. For all the practical purposes, this is "situational homosexuality".

Some dudes are genuinely homosexual, so once their buddies start getting married, and cease to be available for the usual play; move on to the major cities and enjoy a somewhat more relaxed gay life. Some stay put and suffer, too.
