Dashboard cams...for cyclists.

My roomie got hit on the bicycle today. Fortunately it wasn't serious, but it did slightly warp the rear rim. The driver is buying new rims.

Just minutes after he texted me that info, a cop ran a red light at 100+ MPH (literally) right in front of me as I was legally crossing (also on my bicycle).

So, seeing as I carry my GoPro pretty much everywhere, I decided to start wearing it on the head mount and recording every time I cycle the streets.

I put it on after work and recorded my short 15 minute ride home. During that time there were three cars that sped up to an intersection in order to cut me off and turn in front of me. The video CLEARLY shows their tag numbers.

I'm putting together a compilation of such events in my video editor, and will start releasing weekly edits on YouTube to show all these asshole drivers. Hopefully it'll do some good to increase safety for cyclists, since it's becoming more popular as a form of urban and suburban commute.

It has been a while since I shopped for a helmet cam, but one brand has (had?) a "continuous recording" feature. It records a set interval (5 min?) then re-records over it, again and again. If something interesting actually happens, you reach up and push a button, in which case it saves that loop and starts another. No idea about battery life though.

That would be interesting - also if a Youtube site had dashcam vids from cars taken of cyclists - Here in SF the bike nazis believe they are immune from all traffic laws (and are apparently convinced of their own immortality.) It is amazing how often any driver or pedestrian gets to watch bikers speed thru stop signs and stop lights, often narrowly escaping death from cars that have the right of way. The arrogance of cyclists here is truly amazing. Maybe it's the wild west spirit that shines through here - except that a couple of pedestrians have been run down and killed by bikers in the last year. Since bicycles don't have to carry insurance, unless the riders are rich, there is no compensation for their victims.

Oh, I've already got video of one cyclist on this same recording who thought it would be a good idea to exit a parking lot without even looking for traffic. I coulda hit him and he never woulda seen me coming. He better be glad I wasn't a driver texting.

GoPro is the absolute best...hands down. It's the industry standard for professional video. I record in 4k cinema mode (ultra HD - 4x the resolution of standard HD).

As for a helmet, that's for trails and freeride/downhill. I don't wear a helmet for street riding. But I do have the head mount for GoPro.

Oh, and GoPro records in 10 minute intervals, automatically creating a new file every 10 minutes. It pieces together seamlessly in the video editor.

Smart idea with the gopro. I wish there was something like this for runners, unfortunately running with a gopro is just too much weight.

I try to avoid running downtown and through the city now, due to almost being hit several times. I have even had one person intentionally drive me off the road while giving rude gestures at me.

The GoPro weighs less than a few ounces. The head mount weighs less than a few ounces.

It's perfect for runners. Buy one, and the head mount. Wear it when running.

    You won't regret it. icon_wink.gif

Edit: PS. The more video we have of drivers not respecting non-drivers, the safer our streets and sidewalks will be for people who choose different methods of transportation. icon_wink.gif

I actually bought into the Contour universe, instead. It was lighter, sleeker, and more advanced at the time, e.g. first that used the iPhone as a monitor. But then the company sort of melted down. They seem to be coming back under new ownership, but it's not certain that they'll survive.

BTW: The only people riding this time of year around here seem to have their heads scrwed on, but in the summer, all the atrocities are caused by retards on bikes.

Bicyclists violating traffic laws are a serious problem everywhere. Running red traffic lights, ignoring stop signs, riding against traffic, riding on the sidewalks and having a belligerent attitude towards both motorists and pedestrians. Bicyclists definitely do not help their own cause but then they complain why motorists and pedestrians despise them so much. All they have to do is observe their behavior when riding on the road and see why they are despised. Our government authorities are also to blame because they turn a bling eye to bicyclists violating the laws. A very sickening situation indeed.

The Contour has a cylindrical design, which makes it bulkier and less manageable when it comes to mounting options.

The GoPro has a rectangular design, which allows it to fit in smaller places and have more mounting options.

I have over $600 of GoPro mounts (all of them). If it need mounting, I have the mount for it. If something extra is needed, it's easy to manipulate the current mounts and incorporate them with other mounting options.

That's the primary reason I chose the GoPro for my clients' needs. icon_wink.gif

I'm not gonna argue with you, 'but I got a whole bag full of contour mounts (and you can also use Ram mounts for both of em). But GoPro just seems to be winning by default - I noticed at the surf shop that most of the rental boards had GoPro mounts already glued onto them. Though about half of them were broken.

Try mounting a Contour to the front of your forehead. icon_wink.gif

I've been thinking about getting the Sony Action Cam. The new model is really small and light. Video quality seems good, plus image stabilization.

    No plans. Just a dream.

However, it wouldn't be the first dream that came true. icon_wink.gif

GoPro is fine, but the WaspCam is also an alternative. The Gideon model comes with a watch/OLED monitor that shows what the camera is seeing.

Logged on to fleabay this morning and they've got some cheap chinese knock-off of a GoPro, with a bunch of mounts, for $60. Listed on the front page.

Practically disposable. But... my experience getting software to work with (other) cheap chinese cameras has not been great. Possible... but not great.

I wonder if they make those for dog collars. Would come in handy at the dog run when they're attacked and the owners of the other dogs lie or delude themselves with "'Not MY kid!' Syndrome."

Yeah, I've thought of strapping one onto the dogs to see just what it is they take off after into the woods. (Usually either deer or a lone coyote.) But then I'd have to scroll through hours of laying in the yard and self-crotch-licking.

Sony sells a pet harness mount for their Action Cam. I think GoPro recently released one as well.
