Trey Parker and Matt Stone also had a team of lawyers before they released their South Park episode that focused on Scientology and Tom Cruise's coming out of the closet. I guess the lesson here is that one shouldn't fuck with Dianetics without a ton of money and support.

Cults are fascinating. I did some 'undercover' journalism on both Scientology and "The Moonies" many years ago.

I joined a Scientology study group intended for new recruits. It was 6 weeks of fun and games---with a big dose of the nonsensical pseudoscience known as Dianetics.

After the first course was over and I declined additional training(Very Expensive Additional Training)....a Scientology rep came to my apartment to let me know that I was not going to be allowed to end the program.

"The work" I had done was too important to end...he told me.

After 2 full hours of his relentless pitch, I had an inspiration.

I looked deeply into the eyes of this Very Straight Robot...and told him that I couldn't pay attention to what he was telling me...
because "I'm Gay and I find you very, very attractive!"

    He left 30 seconds later.

All religion is 'cult' to some extent. I'm not sure that, say, the Jehovah's Witnesses or LDS are that different from Scientology, when you look at the extent to which they try to control the lives of their members. Scientology does, however, seem to be especially controlling in the way it hounds its lapsed members and anyone criticizing its practices. I'm sure there are a lot of lawyers out there praising the existence of Scientology (kerching!).

Cruise is clearly a bright and personable guy. How on earth did he get so wrapped up in the Scientology cult? Even if he wanted to leave, they probably have too much dirt on him now.
