It's very well made but the commercial aspect really sours it for me.

Yeah. I think it's brilliant that the Christmas Truce has been used. A reminder of the true messsage of Christmas "Peace on Earth: Goodwill to All". That peace is a blessing and our natural state: war is a monstrous, evil thing.

It was very brave to use it.

But, at the same time, with it being an advert for Sainsbury's that makes it tacky, and cheep - crude commercial exploitation of a real, moving, harrowing war and a single bright, beautifuly, blessed moment in those four years of hell.

Yeah. I don't know whether to love or hate it. Yes it's promoting Sainsbury's but it's also putting the Christmas Truce in millions of homes...it won't be forgotten. People will ask questions from seeing the advert, think about the war and that Christmas Truce in 1914.

ugh. totally had me in tears. it may have been only a commercial, but it is still wonderful to see that kindness can be seen even in the midst of war, and that peace, if only for a little while, can be real. i love christmas icon_smile.gif

I really hate this advert, I have to turn over every time it comes on. This event is presented out of context without any deaths being shown, and is hijacked for the purposes of flogging bloody chocolate.

What I find much more interesting is the various unofficial agrements between different sides not to try that hard to shoot each other during wars. George Orwell wrote Homage to Catalonia about his time in the Spanish Civil War, and the practice was widespread.

World War I’s Christmas Truce, 100 Years Ago

As the sun set on Christmas, the fighters retreated to their respective trenches. A few ceasefires held until New Year’s Day. In most locations, however, the war resumed on December 26. At 8:30 a.m. in Houplines, Captain Charles Stockwell of the 2nd Royal Welch Fusiliers fired three shots into the air and raised a flag that read “Merry Christmas.” His German counterpart raised a flag that read “Thank you.” The two men then mounted the parapets, saluted each other and returned to their sodden trenches. Stockwell wrote that his counterpart then “fired two shots in the air—and the war was on again.”
